Health to me is so much more than the absence of disease and illness. Not only is it important to be physically healthy but mentally and emotionally as well. Engaging in self-care activities, surrounding myself with people that make me happy and being kind to myself and others are just as important to me as eating healthy, staying active and being generally 'healthy'.

Meat is the centrepiece of most South African dishes, with a 'Braai', the South African equivalent of barbeque, being an essential part of South African culture that brings family and friends together.

Derived from the Dutch word for ‘grilled meat’, a braai is different from other forms of barbecuing in that it must be done over a fire. Even once the food has been cooked, the fire is fed throughout the braai, as the social centrepiece of the event.

Meat and poultry contain protein which provides essential nutrients such as iron, zinc and vitamin B12. Some meat however, can contain high amounts of saturated fat which can raise blood cholesterol levels which increases the risks associated with coronary heart disease. It is important to make healthy choices in ensuring a balanced diet is maintained.

I resonated most with competency standard 12.3 of Domain 7. I aim to provide quality, person-centred care through my understanding that each person is shaped differently based on factors such as culture, values, life experiences, and current situation.

Various cultural and traditional beliefs regarding health can affect how people respond to symptoms perceived. Such practices could lead to delayed presentation to hospitals, poor adherence to treatment, and psychosocial problems (e.g., stigma and discrimination), which can result in poor health and wellbeing for patients.

Person-centred care with regards to refugees to me means being unbiased toward the way a person interprets and explains their health problems or illness and respecting that this can influence how symptoms are presented, perception of treatment and outcome as well as treatment adherence. Moving forward both in my studies and as a registered nurse, I endeavour to gain trust from my patients and their families through practicing effective communication and ensuring the patient and their family remain involved and informed regarding their health and treatment whilst remaining open-minded and respectful to their concerns and wishes.

https://culturaldiversityhealth.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Culturally-responsive-clinical-practice-Working-with-people-from-migrant-and-refugee-backgrounds-Jan2019.pdf
