Plant anatomy or phytotomy is the general term for the study of the internal structure of plants. By educating ourselves on the anatomy of plants, we can collectively improve our food security in the United States- or speaking on a larger scale- the world. Being knowledgeable on not only how plants grow and develop, but also what encourages growth and what goes on inside of them can be a helpful tool in improving the crop supply of the world.

“The fundamental understanding of plant biochemistry, physiology and genetics, along with insights into ecology, plant evolution and the domestication of common crop species will have to serve agricultural applications to ensure that the growing population of our rapidly changing planet will have sufficient food in the coming decades.” (Gross)

I have attached a video explaining the basic anatomy of plants.

It is important to know about plant growth and how to identify the conditions that enable plants to grow because it is essential to a plant’s survival. Farmers need to be knowledgeable about plant growth and conditions required for a good planting season and to be able to feed their family and others around the nation. Linked below is an article detailing the processes of plant growth and it’s importance.

“Photosynthesis, respiration and transpiration are the three major functions that drive plant growth and development (Figure 24). All three are essential to a plant's survival. How well a plant is able to regulate these functions greatly affects its ability to compete and reproduce.”

The city of Austin, Texas has a guide for native and adapted plants to help citizens protect and preserve the city’s water resources with less intensive plants. These native and adapted plants “tend to be drought-tolerant; need little if any supplemental fertilizer; are resistant to many diseases and pests; and many provide habitat and food sources for local wildlife.”

“The environmental conditions across Austin vary quite a bit, so it is critical to evaluate your specific site conditions. For example, consider the soil type and depth, sun and shade patterns, and microclimate factors.

It is important to know about the affect that biomes have on plant diversity.

Due to the factors that characterize a biome such as climate, weather patterns, and soil quality- plants evolve adaptations that help them survive.

These conditional adaptations lead to differences in the plant from biome to biome, and can affect the yield, size, and shape of the plant. This is why the mango tree growth rate, mango tree growth stages, and mango tree height vary based on soil and weather conditions. Furthermore, this explains why mangoes grown in tropical climates like Puerto Rico are very different from mangoes grown on your back porch in Georgia.

The history of plants reaches as far back as the beginning of time; they are producers of energy, air and long time aids of ailments and illnesses. Throughout this course I’ve learned of the sheer importance of plants in our world; and I believe that it’s one of the keys to stopping or at least slowing global warming.

Studies show that there was a 12% increase in photosynthesis which translates to 14 petagrams of additional carbon taken out of the atmosphere by plants each year, this is roughly the equivalent of the carbon emitted worldwide from burning fossil fuels in 2020 alone.

This is a very large increase in photosynthesis, but it’s nowhere close to removing the amount of carbon dioxide we’re putting into the atmosphere,” said Berkeley Lab scientist Trevor Keenan, lead author of the study. “It’s not stopping climate change by any means, but it is helping us slow it down.”

https://newscenter.lbl.gov/2021/12/08/plants-buy-us-time-to-slow-climate-change-but-not-enough-to-stop-it/
