I think that the author's purpose for writing this piece is to show the struggle between friends and families during the war. O'flaherty wrote this story because so many people have no idea what happened in the war. Some people didn't even know it happened. He wrote this peice to show things that would be insanely difficult to talk about. He told us through a short story about a young man that was put through the war and had to shoot his own brother. Through this story, he expresses to us so many things about the war. The excitment, the betrayal, the arrogance. O'flaherty inspired us with this story to look more into the history of this war, and to ask more questions about it, to express an interest in something that was severly depressign so that we could understand what went on in such a war that puts brother against brother, father against mother, mother against daughter.

Peyton Farquhar is being executed because he was set up by an Union Scout. He went to the bridge and tried to sabotage it, but was caught.

Something that is odd is that he is taking a really long time to die. It's been like five pages and he hasn't died yet. When will he die?
He can hear really well.
Seems to slow down time.
Can see really really well.
Not focusing on that someone was shooting at him, but instead focuses on the guys eyes.
He seems very intellectual.

          Man sabotages

He gets hung for his crimes
     He somehow survives

oops. nevermind he's dead.

It is set on a boat, where they are very close to an island that is supposedly a place where several ships dissapear. There is a man that doesn't believe, and he stays up for a smoke. He later falls off the boat and it leaves him behind. He swims to the island and finds blood and a bullet shell. He goes up to a large building and is let in. He eats dinner with the other guy as he explains that he captures people from other ships, trains them, and hunts them down in the forest.

I tihnk that after Rainsford jumped into the water, the dogs will lose his scent and he will swim a little ways away. I don't think he will get very far though, until the coldness of the water reaches him and he gets hypothermia. I think that he is going to die in the waves, and General Zaroff will keep on doing his thing.
