The presidios in Alta California were often built on or near natural harbors. They were not very far from the missions. All the presidios were the shape of a square. They had a open courtyard on the inside. All the presidios were built the same way, they had a chapel, storage rooms, workshops, sleeping areas, and a house for the commander. These pieces of land were used for protection of the soldiers and their families.

Pueblos were usually located in valleys or farming areas. Just like presidios, all pueblos were built the same. In the center of each pueblo there was a plaza where all the people can gather. Other buildings, such as a church surrounded the plaza. These little cities were used for farming so that the soldiers could have food.

One purpose of all the missions was to claim Alta California for Spain. The missions had to be close to natural resources because the missions were a place to rest or heal so they had to have a lot of resources. The way these missions were designed with a church, priest's quarters, workshops, a kitchen, storerooms, a well, Indian huts, an irrigation ditch, and a river.

At first, the population in the California colony grew slowly. It was difficult for the missionaries to survive, but later on in time more Indians came to the missions. Some came on their own and some were forced. The Indians were taught Christianity and Spanish ways of life. They were taught how to care for cattle, horses, goats, sheep, and chickens. The economy was changed by the Indians coming and going, sadly so was their religion. These new Neophytes/Indians were not allowed to practice their own religions, if they did they would be punished. Many did it anyway.

These Indians were falling fast they had to give up their religion, their celebrations, and their population. The Indians got many diseases like smallpox, measles, and influenza. Their bodies just couldn't fight back. Many people were killed from these diseases. Sadly, after about 75 years later only one third of the population remained.

Well, at first I thought the missions were very helpful and it was very nice of them to let the Indians stay there, but later on as I read through the book I thought differently. I just can't believe how they forced them to the missions and punished them. Horrible! Seriously, only one third was left. Well, that's my opinion. What's yours?
