Prince Henry convinces his father, King John of Portugal, to attack a Muslim trading depot called Ceuta in northeastern Morocco for their riches and captured Moorish people as prisoners of war(POW). This became a "gateway" for Portugal to enter Africa. (p5)

1453 Zurara's The Chronicle of the Discovery and Conquest of Guinea

Zurara published this book about the life of slave trader Prince Henry and bragged about the Portuguese enslaving Africans. The book was popular across Europe and spread the idea that African people are "savages that need taming" (p8)

He was an enslaved Moroccan on a diplomatic journey along the mediterranean sea. He was freed and supposedly sent to survey Africans where he said harsh things about them, "echoed" Zurara's words about his own people, and was considered the first african racist

Richard Mathers

Richard Matthess was a devout English Puritan minister who moved to Massachusetts in the 1600's. Him and Cotton founded churches and Harvard University, where they taught that white Puritans were God’s chosen people, and that all other races were inferior.

When their families intermarried, they both became Cotton Mather’s grandfathers.

The Declaration of Independence, formally titled The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, is the founding document of the United States. Today this is celebrated as The Fourth of July.

The American Revolution was caused by colonial opposition to British attempts to impose greater control over the colonies and to make them repay for its defense of them during the French and Indian War (1754–63)

Thomas Jefferson - 1743-1826

Thomas Jefferson, was a founding Father. He was the third president, and was the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, served as the nation's first Secretary of State, and later as Vice President. ironically died on July 4,1826 or the U.S 50th.

He also had a child with one of his slaves but 2 of his children passed as infants. Their mother was Sally Hemings.

Civil War - 1861

John Cotton

John Cotton is shown as an important figure in early American history. He was a 17th-century minister who believed in slavery and supported racist ideas. Cotton used his interpretation of Christianity to justify treating Black people unfairly. His beliefs helped create the racist systems that lasted for many years in America.

1676 - Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon was a planter. Unlike others, Bacon wasn't upset about race but instead classes. He felt that he was being controlled by those at the top of the hierarchy. But instead of targeting his anger at the rich, he aimed for a tribe of Natives called the Susquehannocks. His goal was to cause destruction within the trade and money area. Starting off with the relations between William Berkeley and the Natives. Bacon would soon declare liberty for all servants and Blacks. Later, this would pit a fight against Bacon and Barkeley titled "Bacon's Rebellion".

1663-1668- Cotton Mather

Cotton Mather is the result of Richard Mather marrying John Cotton's widow. Cotton Mather became the youngest person ever to attend Harvard at just 11 years old. After the Glorious Revolution in 1688, Cotton Mather began writing a book titled the "Memorable Providences, Relating to Witchcraft's and Possessions". This would create the idea that being colored was a curse and also the devils doing. Cotton Mather's idea was that "slaves could be purified and freed". He would end up passing away 1728.

The Age of Enlightenment was an intellectual and philosophical movement taking place in Europe from the late 17th century to the early 19th century. It was led by Benjamin Franklin, This would also lead to the rise of Thomas Jefferson and his ideas.

Jack Johnson - 1878-1946

He was an African American boxer who was the first black world heavy weight boxer. He had a lot of controversy and showed off with his fur coats etc which people didn't like. He died in a car accident in 1946 after being rejected service in a restaurant, he was 68.

Abraham Lincon- Feb 12, 1809- April 15, 1865

Abraham Lincon was the 16th president and is known on the 5 dollar bill. He served from 1816-1865, he was assassinated while in a theater. He led the nation through The Civil War and he ended slavery, he was the only president to own a patent. Abraham Lincoln was the tallest president. One of his most famous speeches was the Gettysburg Address, and it was delivered in 1863.
