None of the kids were taught Italian, or allowed to marry other Italians. In my mind, I have always held the belief that all cultures should assimilate; now I realize that I could feel that way because I am the dominant culture. I never had to leave any parts of myself behind, or believe they were not worthy.

He answered questions from kids who are scared about all that is going on in the world. One piece of advice that I thought was great was to look up all the wonderful contributions of black people and realize there is more to be proud of than to fear. I think about this when selecting diverse texts for the library. Also, during the podcast, a young girl asked "how can kids help bring change?" In the SLJ Day of Dialog video, Reynolds and Kendi talk about how there's a fluidity among that these three states of being and that's okay. Though I'd heard of Malcolm X before, what I'd heard was totally one-sided. Though I'm remembering a fiction book where Black Panthers, I think, were in it. Was the book _One Crazy Summer_?
