This year students made their own drawstring backpacks. Students were taught hand sewing techniques and basic machine skills which they put to use while constructing their bags. They were required to make their own pattern, select and cut their own fabric, and follow steps to complete the bag. Along the way they had to troubleshoot problems with their bags or fabric and address flaws to ensure their bags were usable. Students were extremely engaged and focused during this class and they were very proud of their completed bags. Throughout the year I frequently have students come by to use the sewing machines to make simple repairs on their ripped clothing seams, especially the front pouch pockets on hoodies that often get torn.
