Forced innovation leading to legal streaming services like Spotify.

It’s important to note that Napster and record labels played a similar role in the distribution of music. Predating Napster the record labels had a monopoly on the entirety of distribution, what came with this was markups with no competition to lower the prices, and entire albums had to be bought with no option of simply buying a single you enjoyed. In any industry monopoly leads to greed and the consumers are the ones who suffer. Napster offered a file sharing service, not direct files to the music. And with this came the option of simply getting the music you wanted instead of albums. Therefore morally I don’t see anything wrong with this, especially because Napster wanted to make deals with the outdated almost stuck in the past leaders of the record label industry. Which leads to the second main point. During the legal battles that ensued after much success, Napster was having discussions with Record labels both big ones and independent, to build business models so that they could join forces to hash out any business conflict. Although all of these fell through, back to the point of an obstinate industry. The business models laid the groundwork for the future we currently live in. Specifically the idea of a subscriber based service, this is currently the model the biggest streaming services have all adopted, from spotify and apple music, to even outside of the music industry like netflix, amazon prime etc.

So after analyzing all these facts you can almost describe Napster as a hack before its time, technologically it wasn't a hack, more so an innovation. But what was created socially hacked a huge part of the entertainment industry. Morally the biggest issue was it was before its time as we’ve seen the same services and even advanced versions of it have been made in our modern day, therefore our stance is that Napster morally was sound, and that what it offered to the world was a good thing.
