Reflection on the Teacher's Role

After reading Haci Hasan Yolcu's article "Redefining the Role of the Teacher in Education through Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)," my perspective on the future of teaching and the role of the English teacher has evolved significantly. The author proposes a vision where Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is not a threat, but a catalyst for a profound transformation in the classroom. It made me reflect on how, beyond technology, the essence of our profession is strengthened by adapting and understanding how these tools can enhance learning. The idea that AI can take over routine or repetitive tasks, freeing up valuable time for educators to focus on critical thinking, creativity, and the development of social-emotional skills, is particularly appealing and aligns with my vision of a more humane and personalized education.

The article emphasizes that redefining the role of the teacher is not just about integrating new tools, but about reimagining pedagogy itself. We will no longer be the sole providers of information, but rather facilitators, guides, and mentors. In the context of English teaching, this means we can dedicate more time to genuine interaction with students, authentic problem-solving, and the creation of meaningful projects. AI can help us tailor materials to each student's individual needs, provide instant feedback, and create immersive learning experiences. However, the spark of motivation, deep cultural understanding, and human connection will remain the prerogative of teachers—elements that no AI can fully replicate.

I believe the role of the English teacher should be redefined as a designer of educational experiences that strategically integrate different pedagogical strategies to optimize the process, always keeping the student at the center. We will be responsible for teaching students to interact critically with these dimensions, to discern information, to ask relevant questions, and to use tools as allies in their linguistic development. Our value will not lie in "knowing more than the machine," but in knowing how to guide our students. After reading Haci Hasan Yolcu's article "Redefining the Role of the Teacher in Education through Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)," my perspective on the future of teaching and the role of the English teacher has evolved significantly.
