The postcolonial theory is a way to have a conversation comparing and contrasting literature. It offers themes to help explore the text from different perspectives.
Although philosophers and writers have been talking about the idea of the POCO theory for years, it originated in the late 1970s. In the beginning it was a way to relate tov literature in the colonial era. Now you can use the theories in any literature.

Reflection

If I had to reflect my life with any of the POCO themes, it would be identity. I struggle with my true identity for two reasons. The first is what I want to major in. This is a reflection of what I want to be and how I want people to see me as. I am currently enrolled to become an educator but I think my heart is to become a social worker. I was at this same crossroad years ago leaving me with college hours in both majors. My biggest dilemma is that UIW do not have a social work program. The second struggle of identity is the fact that I married my wife and although we are in 2017, not everyone is acceptive of our union. This is my first semester here at UIW and when I mentioned my wife to one of the ladies in the financial aide office, she was not as friendly to help me. In fact she sent me to someone else. With that said I have not been so open to share my private life to anyone. I am not shame of who I love, I just feel that I can't share the information without fear of being treated differently.

The movie Pretty Woman came out in 1990, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. The themes that stand out to me is class and identity. Julia Roberts plays a hooker name Vivan that meets a big time business man Edward Lewis (Richard Gere). Although their meeting was on accident, it develops into friendship/love. Lewis buys the best of everything and don't have to worry about paying for things. Vivan on the other hand have a roommate and they are still unable to cover rent. Lewis exposes Vivan to a better life and in the end she discovers that she want more out of life for herself. For that reason her way of viewing herself makes her try to change her identity.

In the movie The Family Man it also deals with the themes of Identity and class. In the movie Jack Campbell (Nicolas Cage) travels back in time to the road he didn't take. When the movie starts he is this big time boss man that works his team through the holidays and he has lots of money to show for his success. Then the movie turns to if he had married his college sweet heart Kate Reynolds (Tea Leoni), how different his life would have been. He goes from this big shot to this working class tire salesman, married with two children. Campbell struggles with his true identity and how he fits in with being a family man.
