For most kids, college is their first experience of being away from home for long periods of time. Without parental supervision one is free to make decisions without their input. This new found freedom can often lead over eating. College students are also very busy, with a heavy focus on school exercise takes a back seat. High school student athletes turn in to college scholars. Another factor that contributes to the Freshman 15 is stress. When students are stressed they may resort to Maladaptive Coping techniques, especially over eating! Finally, the last likely reason for weight gain in college is beer! Molly Kimball, registered dietitian and sports nutritionist at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans, says, "Food becomes a way to exert control for many Freshmen when they feel little control in many areas of their lives,"

Sickness: When someone gains weight, the body has a harder time keeping its systems healthy. In college, it is very important to stay as healthy as possible. Harvard Health Publications says, " Excess pounds do more than increase your weight—they increase your risk of major health problems. People who are overweight or obese are more likely to get sick. Fortunately, losing weight can reduce your risk of developing these problems."

Energy: College demands a lot of energy! Whether academic or social a college student is always on the go. If a student suffered from the Frehsman 15, other areas of their academic life would suffer as well. The body needs an income of nutrients to keep it functioning at its highest level. There is a strong link between fatigue and weight. When you are over weight your body has to work twice as hard to do the simplest of tasks, even unconscious activities require your body to do more work.

1: Snack! Eat small healthy snacks through out the day. Eating small bits regularly can help boost your metabolism, the process of converting food into fuel.

2: Exercise. Exercising regularly will help prevent your body from gaining excess weight. There probably isn't enough time in a busy academic schedule to spend hours at the gym and thats okay! Small adjustments to everyday life work just as well! Some quick tips on ways to get more exercise on a busy schedule are...

Walk to class

Use the stairs if your building has an evaluator option

Take a walk around campus

Park in the back of the parking lot

Encourage friends to do these with you!

3: Manage your time. Most of the time in college time gets away from people so they resort to the faster, less healthy option. Make a meal schedule where you visit the cafeteria to ensure you have enough time to make the right choice!
