I did my observation in three classrooms at Abner Val Jean Jackson Elementary School. I had the pleasure of observing a classroom containing preschooler’s aged 4 to 5 years old most of the students in this class are special needs with Speech, ADHD and autism. There were 18 students the classroom. My eyes were on three students 1 girl and 2 boys with developmental challenges. This type of observation opportunity helped me to see the real life application of what I have learned in this class. I was interesting to see the variety of cases found in one typical classroom setting. I would like to note out the very important things that I have discovered and mostly what I have learned in this particular classroom. The students were in a safe and nurturing atmosphere. They appeared free from stress and I could visually tell they felt at ease with their teachers and fellow students. The room has enough space for children to play and learn. The room was clean and very well organized. The room was very quiet. All the centers are very well labeled with pictures at the children’s eye level. Most of the pictures are at the children’s eyes level and display diversity. The teacher treated the children with love and respect. She listened and responded to children with love and enthusiasm. Teacher gives clear and precise brief instructions to the children.

Things I Was Surprised About

I was very surprised how most children in the class, paid attention and followed directions and rules during circle time, activities and outside play. The one observation that I found truly amazing, was that they would cheer for their fellow classmates. Children were working very well together on the activity. They were talking to each other as they identified the letters that matched or rhymed together. Children were also working with their partners and helping each other when they were practicing learning the numbers. One great example of them being kind to each other was when one students helped another by showing them what the number 8 was when they were stuck.

I love the teacher’s ideas by putting the children to work together while interacting with each other at the same time. I love the smart board in the classroom. It is very helpful, especially for visually learners.

I have learned that giving clear and precise brief instructions to the class is an important skill as it avoids misunderstanding and misbehavior in the classroom. I have learned that a well-organized and clean room will promote learning as well as group work. I would love to incorporate music in my classroom in the future because music is essential for children’s development and enhance cognitive processes.

I have acquired a better understanding of problems children face in their development. This observation has significantly helped me in my own life, especially as I may face critical decisions about the development of my own children one day. I have also learned that some of the difficulties special children face has to do with the way they are perceived and treated by society in general. My understanding of working with children with special needs is an opportunity to gain valuable life experience.
