"Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members." Jeremiah Johnson desires to move west and live off of the land, he does not enjoy the comfortable city life and the problems of society.

"Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist." Johnson goes against the advice of many people he meets, who tell him not to go west, that he will die, that he is not fit for that life. He does not conform and pursues that lifestyle regardless.
Johnson is skilled, in hunting, trapping and fighting, he utilizes his frontiersman skills to overcome obstacles like freezing weather, starvation, and being pursued by Native Americans.
