Jeremiah Johnson desires to move west and live off of the land, he does not enjoy the comfortable city life and the problems of society.</div><div><br>"Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist." Johnson goes against the advice of many people he meets, who tell him not to go west, that he will die, that he is not fit for that life. He does not conform and pursues that lifestyle regardless.<br>Johnson is skilled, in hunting, trapping and fighting, he utilizes his frontiersman skills to overcome obstacles like freezing weather, starvation, and being pursued by Native Americans.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"Shine" by Henry Rollins reflects many ideas from "Self-Reliance". Rollins sings "If I listened to everything they said to me i wouldn"t be here." This reflects the idea of being a non-conformist, of doing what you want, believing what you believe no matter what others say. Additionally, Rollins sings "You better get a grip on yourself or you won't be around too long", expressing the idea from "Self-Reliance" that you must trust yourself, that the only person that is always there is you, and the only person who you can fully rely on is yourself</div>]]></description>

Emerson creates an emotional appeal by stating that those who put forth effort and care towards what they do are happiest.<br><br>Ethos: "God will not have his work made manifest by cowards."
