The Columbine School Shooting was a massacre and attempted bombing that occurred on April 20th, 1999, at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado. Two teens, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold went on a shooting spree, killing 13 people and wounding more than 20 others, before turning their guns on themselves and committing suicide. Originally they planned on having bombs go off on in the cafeteria, at approximately 11:17, but when the bombs failed to detonate, they took matters into their own hands, starting their shooting spree. An article I read stated that Harris and Klebold purposely chose athletes, minorities, and Christians as their victims. Something else I read stated that "There was speculation that Harris and Klebold committed the killings because they were members of a group of social outcasts called the Trenchcoat Mafia that was fascinated by Goth culture." It was also speculated that Harris and Klebold had carried out the shootings as retaliation for being bullied.

After this shooting had occurred, many schools began to establish "zero-tolerance" rules regarding threats and behaviors of students. Although we didn't get the chance to punish the kids that did this massacre, however Mark Manes, the man who sold a gun to Harris and bought him 100 rounds of ammunition the day before the murders, was sentenced to six years in prison. Additionally, Philip Duran, who had introduced the kids to Manes, was also sentenced to prison time. Many victims' families had filed lawsuits against the school and law enforcement but were soon dismissed in court. This massacre sparked a disagreement about gun control, and interpretation of the second amendment.

There was a documentary made on the Columbine School Shooting, called Bowling for Columbine. The producers wanted to express and explore the issues of school shootings and what schools, parents, and law enforcement can do to help prevent these attacks. This link above will take you to a website, where the video that they uploaded can show just how horrible this massacre was.

1) Why did I choose this topic?
I chose this topic because, not only is this still happening today, but it is getting worse and worse as time goes on. Just yesterday, there was a shooting at an elementary school. These kids will never get to see and experience the world. This is a huge issue and Columbine was the spark of problems that are still happening today. I really chose this topic because I wanted to research how and why a human being could do something as awful as this. I will never understand how someone could do this, but I can research why they did it and see the signs, and hopefully prevent this from happening in the future.
2)What did you already know or think about the topic going into it? - I knew about this shooting before getting into this project. However, I didn't know what motives/timing/ original plans and how many people were injured.
3)What did you learn from your research?-I leanred that Columbine was a horrific masacure that killed 13 people. The shooters had been planning this for a year. There plan didn't go right, so they then took matters into their own hands, and after killing and injuring many, they decied to take their own lives as well.
4)How did your research change your opinion?- My research doesnt change my opinion, it only stregthens it. My opinion on this topic was that it was the worst school shooting ever. This masacure inspriered many to restric guns, take more procaution, and more saftey measures. Although we shouldn't have to do these kinds of things, we will hopefully be prepared in the future.
5) How does this topic relate to the world today? -This topic relates to the world today espically becuase people are still scared for their lives when they enter school. There are still school shootings happening today.
