No. It was full of unsanitary things such as bugs and beaver drops. Those are full of bacteria. From what I remember, it was his first day, so he could survive without water for at least 1 more day. I think he should've found a fresher and cleaner source of water, if he gets sick, surviving is going to be difficult.

For example when he lost his hatchet, he swam to the bottom of the lake to retrieve the hatchet. I think old Brian wouldn't have done the same. This chapter has a lot of examples of how Brian matured, like the part where Brian lost his hatchet in the lake. At first, old Brian was back, but then he realized that was what he would do in the start. After realizing that, he immediately starts going to retrieve the hatchet, and stops scolding himself. This shows his new mentality of fixing his problems and how he had changed since the beginning.

One way I think that this chapter shows that Brian has matured is that when Brian loses the hatchet and even thought it's hard to get it he tries many times to get it back because he realizes that everything he was able to do was thanks to the hatchet. This proves that even when Brian was having trouble landing the plane, he didn't give up. Also, the text: "Going to die, Brian thought. This is showing that even though he thought he was going to die, he persevered and didn't give up.
