I have several young people who have been in arts courses all 4 years of high school which is difficult in a small school with limited flexibility in the yearly scheduling of classes. The seniors will be recognized this year with cords at graduation. They can wear Their cords with pride. They will also be recognized at senior awards night where I will speak about each student. Additionally year end art show highlighting their tireless work will be opening that week. Proud and happy days ahead.

All of my students are aware that they can do the assignment in an alternate method if needed. I think this helps to put everyone on a level playing field and they don't have to stay in a box. I had a really great boss when I was a baker who said "It really doesn't matter what your method is as long as the result is the same." I live by that rule.

To reduce obstacles for some of my students, I first find out what they can do, then I build on that and utilize those strengths to direct their learning. This might mean adjusting the assignment as it unfolds or making adjustments to the final product. Whatever the case, UDL is so important and builds on what the students can do so that they can be successful.

When I consider where UDL practices are most needed in my classroom, I think of the students I have who miss a lot of school. When they do come to school they are disengaged because they aren't there very often, the students are bonded to each other differently than they are to the student who is almost always absent. Because of this, I need to be ready to meet that student where ever he is emotionally and mentally when/if he walks through the door. I want him to have good experiences and success when he is there. UDL helps with this because I can provide options to the student(s). The disengaged student(s) tend to perk up when they can choose the method for learning. They also have better success because they remain engaged in the learning task they chose. And, leave having had a good day, as opposed to feeling lost and disconnected from the group due to chronic absenteeism. Were we not allowed to adjust our curriculum and design learning experiences many of our students would be checked out for most of their education.

I try not to be too quick to bail out struggling students, but allow them to try and possibly fail multiple times. I feel like this is equivalent to allowing them to work at their ZPD. Fortunately the students select projects of great interest to them and will persevere. This is where the greatest learning and advancement of skills occurs. In some cases, this may mean allowing a student to struggle with a particularly difficult, or perhaps a task as simple as choosing colors, depending on that particular students abilities.

I think to use UDL with my students I need to understand their starting point is. All students are very diverse with different experiences, talents, and struggles, and so understanding my student's starting point, helps significantly. From there teaching a concept and letting my students develop from their starting point . This allows kids to build their confidence and to grow. UDL works for everyone... this depends on what goals we are trying to achieve. Currently in my class, I have kids of all different levels. I focus on one main idea and teach that and let the students progress from there. Crobinson

The teacher used other people to assess student progress toward the summative product. Most importantly, she had an artist mentor who gave instruction and then came back to get an update on the progress the students had made. Also, she had conversations with the students where they articulated their thoughts and the process they went through to get to where they were. She had many opportunities for formative assessment through checking in with the students and having conversations with them that elicited their thoughts and understanding of the process and elements of the Woodland art.

My focus of this is visual arts- but I have recently had experiences in drama with an 11th grader who has an almost non-existent reading level. one adaptation we worked with was to write the play we were producing ourselves, so that her lines were limited and were her own creation to help her learn them better. We then chose a published play for the spring that had a very small speaking part that had a large physical role. Also, We noticed that she was successful in learning the parts of her classmates, but not so successful with her own part, so I recorded her lines so that she could listen to them and learn them.
Heather Bordwell

I am looking forward to starting this next year as a teacher, which will be year 2 for me! It will be really wonderful to know what I'm doing, and to do things slightly differently in some aspects. Outside of school, I am looking forward to a vacation in South Carolina at the end of this month.

The teacher used a lot of different formative assessment strategies in this lesson, including vocabulary checks, informal observations, and checklists on the board so students could self-assess. He could continue to use informal observations and "thumbs-up/thumbs-down" checks for understanding.

UDL is simply best practice. I believe that all classrooms should follow UDL practices in order to engage all learners. I can use UDL practices to create hands-on learning activities that engage all modes of learning, specifically in response to students learning letters and high-frequency words. Students can respond using art, stamps, rainbow tracing, listening to audio, etc.
