Chapter 9

Summary:

Boxer is seriously wounded from the battle and will take time to heal, the conditions are harsh on the farm. The windmill begins to be rebuilt and Napoleon has 35 children born, which is why a school is created. The fees are increased and Squealer convinces animals that things are fine and better than before. The farm becomes a republic and because of being the only candidate Napoleon is elected president. The pigs start brewing, Napoleon has sugar on his table, and the pigs start to get fat. Pigs have lamps and candles in the house but other animals cannot use them. Moses returns with his stories of the sugar candy mountain. Finally boxer gives up on the job and instead of sending him to a hospital they kill him, the chapter ends with a big pig party with the pigs drinking whisky.

Key events:

· Boxer is killed

· Animals start to rebuild the windmill

· Napoleon has 35 children born

· The farm becomes a Republic

· Napoleon becomes president

Vocabulary:

1. Hoof: “Clover treated the hoof with poultices of herbs which he prepared by chewing them”.

The horny part of the foot of an ungulate animal, especially a horse.

There was a clatter of hoofs as a rider came up to them.

2. Geese: “For sheep at seven, and for hens and geese at five”.

Long necked bird.

She had seen several flocks of geese flying overhead”

3. Shrill: “Reading out the figures in a shrill”.

Adjective (of a voice or sound) high-pitched and piercing.

A shrill laugh.

4. Ribbons: “The privilege of wearing green ribbons on their tails on Sundays”.

A long, narrow strip of fabric, used for tying something or for decoration.

The tiny pink ribbons in her hair.

5. Bleating: “With a tremendous bleating”.

Verb (Of a sheep, goat, or calf) make a characteristic weak, wavering cry.

The lamb was bleating weakly.

Book questions 4 and 5

4. The pigs think that Moses is lying because they live quite well on the farm unlike other animals since they are privileged. Yes they did allowed him back in the farm “they allowed him to remain on the farm, not working, with an allowance of a gill of beer a day.”

5. Benjamin demonstrates his loyalty and concern in chapter 9 after Boxer suffers a serious injury. Benjamin remains by his side while Boxer suffers and does his best to keep the flies off him.

5 line summary:

Summary:

In this chapter the animals have to work more in the windmill and receive less food. Over the time Napoleon becomes more powerful and at the same time less seen in public, also Minimus makes him a poem that replaces Beasts of England. Also more executions occur and it is rumored that Frederick is a sadistic torturer of animals and a victim of unfounded gossip. After too much work the windmill is completed. Napoleon declares the death sentence to Frederick and then Napoleon declares the death sentence to Frederick, because of this the Battle of windmill takes place. Napoleon drinks from Mr. Jones' whiskey until he almost died but recovered two days later.

Key events:

· The battle of the windmill

· Napoleon pronounces death sentence in Frederick

· The 5th commandment changes from “No animal shall drink alcohol” to “No animal shall drink alcohol to excess

· The new windmill is completed

· The pigs discover a case of whisky in Jones' cellar.

Summary:

In this last chapter the youngest animals have already grown and animalism is an abstract concept for them. Living conditions are very bad for all animals except pigs that even walk on 2 legs "four legs good, 2 legs better" and the 7th commandment changes from “All animals are equal” to “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” The chapter ends with the pigs throwing a dinner party at the house with all the local farmers. The farm changes to Manor farm again, later on pigs and men turn into a fight. Benjamin was always right, “Nothing will ever change”.

Key events:

· Pigs walk in 2 legs

· The 7 commandment changes from to “All animals are equal” to “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”

· The name of the farm changes to Manor farm

· Pigs and men run into a fight

· Pigs throw a dinner party with all the local farmers

Vocabulary:

1. Morose: “since Boxers death more morose and taciturn than ever”.

Sullen and ill-tempered.

I don't mean to sound morose.

2. Milling: “It was used for milling corn”.

Adjective (of a machine) designed to cut or shape metal using a rotating tool.

I had to take it home and drill it out on the milling machine.

3. Fled: “The season came and went, the short animal lives fled by”.

Past and past participle of flee.

At that point, people flee the land looking for a better deal.

4. Untrodden: “when the green fields of England should be untrodden by human feet”

Adjective (of a surface) not having been walked on.

The road to that eastern kingdom is not untrodden by the Huns.

5. Bulk: “supporting his considerable bulk in that position.”

The mass or size of something large.

Residents jump up and down on their rubbish to reduce its bulk.

Book questions 1 and 3

1. The animals that hardly remember the rebellion what will happen to the youngest animals is that animalism is a concept that once existed but that does not have a great importance for the farm and surely that the rebellion never existed.

3. At this point the animals feel hopeful and proud of being part, they feel as the only farm in all the country that was own and managed by animals. It’s ironic at the ending because it’s supposed that the animals own the farm but actually the owners are the pigs who behave more as humans.
