Medical Radiology Technologist
Collaborative Leadership is a leadership where not just one person is assigned to lead. It is based on individual's interests, expertise and skills. Collaborative leadership involves setting a goal and sharing responsibilities in order to achieve a positive outcome for that goal. I believe the most important part about collaborative leadership is that being a team member is most important than being a team leader.

Not only does it have a positive effect for the patient, but also for healthcare professionals themselves. Collaborative Leadership involves having more than one leader on a healthcare team. It involves having multiple team members that contribute to leadership, all providing their own area of expertise, working towards one common goal.

As was previously mentioned, collaborative leadership is a group of multi-disciplinary people that work together to solve a goal. Each individual brings forth their expertise and can adopt a leadership role when their expertise is the most needed. It is a dynamic process that allows for open communication and requires respect.

Medical Radiography Student.
Collaborative Leadership in the Healthcare field is most important if you plan to move forward and evolve to meet the high demands of patient care and healthcare. With so many variables influencing the public perception of what health is and the misrepresentation of facts available on the internet and through social media the demand for leadership within the healthcare field extends from small communities to a larger world perspective. As a major in health sciences and a former health practitioner for 5+ years, what I have experienced as the contributing factor to all good decisions are based on the collaboration of knowledge and information from the point of view of inquiry rather than advocacy. If you are leading from a place of advocacy-meaning that you are advocating for the result you are invested in, you are looking at information from one perspective and with bias to your own directive. If you approach leadership collaboration from the perspective of inquiry you are using shared knowledge to make the best decision for all based on the amount of resources available to you. As a leader this is important as this allows team members to share knowledge while gaining new perspectives. In healthcare the trends are always changing, new information is becoming more readily available for the public everyday and the outdated trends on hierarchal systems are limiting the ability to communicate with each other. To move forward with the impeding change on the perspective of healthcare we must embrace the need for collaborative leadership, leading first from the heart asking ourselves the why of what we do. If we can do this, healthcare leaders will become better communicators and solutions can be found to benefit all affected by change.

Collaborative leadership is when a group of people come together and benefit from one another as they share their individual strengths, ideas and knowledge. Cooperation is an important building block in making a functional team that aims to achieve the same goal and therefore, it is important to treat everyone's thoughts and values with respect. As mentioned by many other students in this board, collaborative leadership is essential in our field and it is something that we must put into practice in our everyday lives.

Medical Radiography Student.
I believe that collaborative leadership is an essential component of a successful interprofessional healthcare team. A collaborative leader encourages discussion and collaboration between all team members, and ensures that decision-making is a team process that is based on the knowledge and expertise of all team members (including the patient). Collaborative leadership is not based on a hierarchical structure, rather it is flexible, as every patient’s situation is unique and the team may require a different healthcare professional to lead based on his or her own area of expertise. I think that practicing collaborative leadership in a health care team would have a positive impact on both patient care, and team dynamics.
