General George Meade's Union army stopped the Confederate army under General Robert E. Lee from attacking the North. Because it weakened the Confederates and put an end to their vision of dominating through conquering the Northern states, this Union victory represented an important event in the war.</p>]]></description>

Albert Sidney Johnston, an important Confederate officer, was killed. With almost 23,000 losses, it was one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War and helped&nbsp;the Union.</p>]]></description>
