"Julia" The Beatles

The song, "Julia", by The Beatles exemplifies this idea of transmission by portraying a sense of longing for Julia. Ratliff explains that this song is all about tone. To specify, the author says Lennon sings in a "secular tune of D major throughout the song except for when he says Julia" (Ratliff 48). He sings an even tone and neutral respect when saying her name. The uneven tone explores a darker moments in the song while the Julia part is more even and happier moments.

~Transmission~

In the book, "Every Song Ever", Ben Ratliff, defines transmission as a "extreme form of emotion in music that transcends specific moods" (Ratliff 53). For example, certain songs can make you express feelings in a different way. Sad songs may portray actual sadness or it can portray nostalgia. Happy songs may portray pure ecstasy of the moment or it can portray a memory of a good time. Furthermore, Ratliff explains how the human voice portrays more of this idea more than music itself. To specify, instrumental music can have a sad undertone, but it is ultimately the human voice that helps us determine what the composer is feeling.
I do agree with Ratliff's perspective of transmission. However, I think that transmission also deals with personal approach to the song. Music can guide you how to feel, but it is not the final decision. That is what makes music so great. Music is not one exact thing. There are a billion viewpoints out there that are all valid and interesting. This is how music keeps growing and diversifying.

Although we are specifically discussing music, it is important to note that transmission can present itself in art as well. For example, the painting, "The Old Guitarist", by Pablo Picasso leads us to believe that this man is sad, sick, or lonely. The use of dark bluesy colors intensifies this idea or theme. While this may not be the meaning behind the picture, it is what the pictures leads us to think and we decide to feel.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Old_Guitarist

The song, "I Miss Those Days", by Bleachers is in the key of C major and transmisses an upbeat tone and bright timbre. If the listener only listens to the music, it sounds very happy. However, when he starts to sing the lyrics, you can hear that he is nostalgic for the old days even when they were not the best memories. For example, he states, "I was lost, but I miss those days."
