We have been reading the story Shark in the Park and I asked the children what other things they might see at the park. Lots of them seemed fixated on the pond in the story and this led onto a discussion about what might be in the pond. They were certain the pond had sharks, which led them to suggest other animals that live in ocean environments. I showed them a video of an aquarium and their favourite animal was the turtle and clownfish.

One of the animals they mentioned was a turtle, so in order to both gauge and spark the children's interest I left a toy turtle in the classroom with a plastic bag round his flipper to prompt discussion and see where the children's thoughts might go. The children wanted to know where the turtle had come from and were concerned about the bag around his flipper. This raised the questions where do turtles come from? What does their environment look like? What do they need to be happy? They also wanted to know what the turtle feels like.
