Inquiry-based Learning & Differentiated Instruction

Inquiry-based Learning helps all learners by allowing them a say in their learning and fostering their curiosity. Teachers guide this learning by emphasizing the student's role in the learning process which, in turn, enhances their learning experience while also strengthening critical thinking and communication skills. Inquiry-based learning supports differentiated instruction as students are encouraged to explore and problem-solve topics that are of interest to them, therefore increasing their participation in authentic learning experiences. Technology can play an important role in inquiry-based learning as students will not only use various tools such as online programs and apps to explore and investigate their interests but, they will also learn to transfer and adapt their technological skills from one tool to another.

Genius Hour

Genius Hour is both inquiry-based learning and differentiated instruction at its best. The idea is that students get 20% of their class time to explore any topic they like; they choose the content based on their personal interests and then research those interests using their own plan of instruction. It is extremely student centred as students set their own goals, choose their own resources, and work at their own pace while still meeting set academic standards and developing important learning skills. These "passion projects" are perfect for an inclusive learning environment and increasing student voice as everyone pursues their own interests and "owns [their]…entire journey".

Students using the Genius Hour could potentially be at each level of the SAMR Model depending on where their inquiry and research leads them. If they're using an online encyclopedia to research their topic, this would be pure substitution but if they're creating a final product that was previously impossible without the use of technology (e.g. the creation of an iMovie WW2 movie trailer that is shared with the class via Google Meets), then they're redefining their learning experience.

Since Genius Hour is so student-centred and the teacher acts as a guide or facilitator at best, the TPACK Framework doesn't necessarily work well here. While TPACK focuses on the triangulation of a teacher's technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge, Genius Hour focuses on student choice in these areas.

Virtual library resources such as Britannica School, Google Books, and Learn 360 offer students various ways to research a topic of their choosing. Whether it's through books, articles, or videos, students can investigate and answer their inquiries with the click of a button. These resources complement inquiry-based learning nicely as they encourage the application of several skills such as critical thinking when doing research, evaluating and choosing reliable online resources, and gathering and organizing research material. Many of these resources are also interactive which increases student engagement in the inquiry process. In terms of supporting differentiated instruction, students can look at a variety of content that connects with their interests and aptitudes before creating a final product that meets curriculum expectations.

The virtual library resources would work primarily on a substitution level according to the SAMR Model. Prior to advancements in technology, completing research was a potentially daunting and arduous task as students had to locate and access print material such as books, encyclopedias, newspapers, and journal articles. Now, with the internet and digital sources, students are able to access information much more quickly and efficiently than ever before. The key is choosing reliable and credible sources that meet their needs.

Incorporating virtual library resources into a teacher's classroom is quite easy as is aligning it with their pedagogical and content knowledge. Because these resources are largely a substitution for more traditional methods of research and tend to be fairly user-friendly, teachers with varying degrees of technological proficiency can still promote and oversee their use in the classroom in ways that benefit the student regardless of the subject area.
