By June 1950, all those who had wanted to leave the camp and were able to leave had done so. Many had emigrated after the founding of Israel and the War of Independence. Only the old, the sick, and their families remained. Foehrenwald was originally supposed to close at the end of 1949, but it stayed open because there were still many people who had nowhere to go. Foehrenwald was the final DP camp to close, functioning until 1957 as a home for Jews who had no place to go.
