From a coaching standpoint

For me to respect a coach they must actually know what they are talking about. For me to respect my coach they need experience; for example, one of my coaches played for team USA so I respect her because she has lots of experience. Playing at a high level has given her plenty of experience. Basically I will respect people who have experience on what they're talking about.

Respect isn't a given

There may be people with a certain amount of power that you are suppose to respect however if they haven't done things to gain your respect then you don't necessarily have to respect them. Respect can also be lost for someone if they have done something that you don't agree with or go against your morals. For example, if all of a sudden my friends thought it was okay to bully or do drugs I would lose respect in them and their view points. To add on to this they could also regain my trust if they do things that undo that action; for instance apologize to the person they bullied or stopped doing drugs.

You may not agree with someone but if you see where they are coming from and understand their reasoning you can still respect their viewpoint. For example, if someone doesn't like tomatoes you don't have to lose respect, you can understand that they may not like the way they taste even if you enjoy them so much

QUOTE

This quote goes back into how you can receive respect from someone. If you give others your respect and kindness it will come back to you and they will give you respect back. This won't always happen however, if you are disrespectful to someone you will most likely receive disrespect in return. What you give is what you get.
