The integrated curriculum is a holistic approach to learning that breaks down traditional subject boundaries, allowing children to explore interconnected concepts across various areas such as reading, writing, math, science, and the arts. It emphasizes partnerships with families, understanding how children learn, and building upon community and cultural contexts. The approach aims to develop children's ability to transfer their learning to different settings and fosters lifelong skills such as self-directedness, problem-solving, and communication. Integration can be achieved through themes, projects, or individual and small group studies, and it provides a balanced mix of teacher-directed and child-initiated experiences. The curriculum also aligns with state or district standards and benchmarks, ensuring that learning is meaningful and applicable to real-world situations.("Integrated Curriculum: Benefits & Examples," n.d.).

Integrated curriculum is a multifaceted approach to education that draws upon various theories and theorists to inform its design and implementation. Here are some key theorists related to integrated curriculum:

John Dewey and Experiential Learning: John Dewey's progressive educational philosophy emphasizes experiential learning, where students actively engage with their environment to construct knowledge. Dewey advocated for a curriculum that is meaningful, relevant, and connected to students' lived experiences, aligning closely with the principles of an integrated curriculum. (Howley-Rouse, n.d.)

Lev Vygotsky and Sociocultural Theory: Lev Vygotsky's sociocultural theory emphasizes the importance of social interaction and cultural context in cognitive development. An integrated curriculum can leverage Vygotsky's ideas by fostering collaborative learning environments where students construct knowledge, share perspectives, and co-construct meaning through dialogue and interaction. (Howley-Rouse, 2021)

The UAE's Ministry of Education (MOE) has developed a comprehensive Early Childhood Education (ECE) curriculum to support children's learning and development from birth to six years old. The curriculum is grounded in child development principles, promoting holistic development across cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and linguistic domains. It is culturally responsive, incorporating elements of Emirati heritage, Islamic values, and local traditions. The curriculum is closely aligned with the UAE's national vision and strategic goals, aiming to prepare children for active, engaged, and responsible members of society. The MOE is committed to continuous improvement, considering feedback from educators, parents, stakeholders, and research findings. The curriculum aims to provide a solid foundation for lifelong learning, success, and well-being.(Ministry of Education, UAE, n.d.)

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) curriculum in the UK is a rich tradition of providing high-quality care and education for young children. Originating in the early 20th century, the curriculum is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, which outlines standards and expectations for children from birth to five years old. The EYFS framework emphasizes a holistic approach to learning, recognizing the interconnectedness of different domains of development and the importance of supporting children's well-being, relationships, and self-confidence. Play-based learning is central to the curriculum, promoting active engagement, creativity, problem-solving, and social interaction. The curriculum also recognizes the vital role of parents as partners in their children's learning and development. The ECE curriculum continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of children and families in today's society.(Admin, 2023)

The "Earth & The Environment Kindergarten Unit" curriculum focuses on developing young children's understanding of how the environment impacts living things and how they can positively impact the environment. The unit includes suggested read-alouds, hands-on activities, and learning goals related to caring for and respecting the environment, conducting investigations, and using inquiry skills.

For the comparison, I will select the UK Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum to contrast with the UAE MOE ECE curriculum. The EYFS curriculum is designed for children aged 0-5 and focuses on seven areas of learning and development, including communication and language, physical development, and understanding the world. The generative themes and big ideas in the EYFS curriculum revolve around holistic child development and school readiness.

One unit of work from the EYFS curriculum that aligns with the UAE MOE ECE curriculum is "Exploring Nature and Seasons." This unit integrates science, language development, and sensory exploration to help children understand the natural world around them. The learning goals include developing observation skills, vocabulary related to nature, and an appreciation for the changing seasons. The scope and sequence involve hands-on activities, outdoor exploration, and opportunities for creative expression.

Dear Arwa, Amna, and Heba,

The discussion of integrated curriculum and its logic is thorough and well-written. The inclusion of prominent thinkers such as Dewey and Vygotsky provides theoretical depth to the topic. The introduction and history of the UAE and UK ECE curricula give useful information about their concepts and ambitions. The comparison of the two courses improves understanding. To improve the work, consider including particular examples or case studies that demonstrate the application of integrated curriculum in both situations. The USA curriculum components are well defined, with a concentration on arithmetic, comprehending the world, expressive arts, and personal development. The UK curriculum stresses a comprehensive approach that includes social and emotional development, communication skills, and respect. Both curricula establish clear, quantifiable objectives for pupils. The significant gaps and recommendations for UAE and UK early childhood education curriculum are enlightening. It successfully indicates areas for development, such as the need for more child-centered learning in the UAE and a greater emphasis on cultural relevance in the UK. The ideas are realistic and constructive, stressing outdoor activities, various evaluation methodologies, and a balanced approach to organized and unstructured time. Strengthening these areas might improve the overall quality of early childhood education in both nations by fostering holistic development and addressing major gaps in present curriculum.

Dear Heba,

I've read the part on the crucial gaps and recommendations for the early childhood curricula in the UK and the UAE with great attention. Your analysis of the educational systems is excellent, especially the section where you stress the need of child-centered learning and the necessity of using a variety of evaluation techniques. Your recommendations for enhancement, such peer evaluations in the UK and outdoor activities to promote environmental consciousness in the UAE, are creative and have the potential to significantly improve learning results. You've done a good job of highlighting one important factor: striking a balance between organised and unstructured time. I like how carefully you reviewed current procedures and offered well-informed improvements. Your use of sources such as Heikka et al., (2022) gives your ideas a strong academic basis.

Dear Amnah,

Your part paper on integrated curriculum in the UK and UAE ECE frameworks has been carefully studied by me. It is admirable that the paper offers a perceptive comparison that emphasises the holistic approach that cuts across conventional topic divisions. The incorporation of influential thinkers such as Dewey and Vygotsky enhances our comprehension of the educational foundations. Notable are the MOE ECE curriculum's cultural sensitivity and the EYFS's focus on play-based learning and holistic development. I value the thorough explanation of the goals and methods of the curriculum, which emphasises the significance of an interdisciplinary approach catered to the requirements of young learners. This contrast gives us a good starting point for thinking about how to apply these ideas to our own teaching methods.

Dear Shouq and Sarah, we would like to thank you for your hard work so far. We can see that both of you did a great job addressing the factors that could support the child’s educational development. Moreover, understanding children’s learning styles in ECE curriculum truly enhances the quality of education provided and contributes to the holistic development of each child and we couldn’t agree more. Therefore, the relationships between the 11 components were concise and straight to the point which made it easy to understand. The similarities and differences between UAE curriculum and the international integrated curriculum was well organized and detailed which should that you both have the knowledge to critique the content and suggest improvements. Overall it was interesting hearing ideas from both of your sides, your work is nicely done.

Dear Aisha, Abeer, and Rehab, you have done a wonderful job organizing the assessment. We appreciate your comparison of the early childhood education curriculum of the Ministry of Education in the United Arab Emirates with the Australian curriculum, highlighting the differences in outcomes, objectives, content, and evaluation methods. We also liked your highlighting of the UAE curriculum’s focus on clear results but lacks clarity in evaluation, timing, and methodology. In addition, it was good that you focused on areas for improvement, particularly in line with the structured approach of the Australian Curriculum. You attractively concluded the statement by emphasizing the need for UAE curricula to be more effective and demonstrating a strong understanding of the principles of curriculum design and clear outcomes in early childhood education. We want to confirm that your effort in the project was evident.
