Conservatism was a way of life and was a way for the south to keep everyone in line. Also this was a way to keep order and domination. In addition, the ways of conservatism allowed everyone to be on equal footing and allowed everyone in the south to be centered around the same values.

Courage was one of the most valued traits, because any southern man from the nineteenth century would have done anything to preserve his stats as a courageous man; he would even go as far as a dueling with another man and risk being killed in order to avoid being called a coward and show courage. Thomas Nelson Page says, "That the Southerner was courageous the whole world admits...It was personal individual courage and devotion to principle which welded it together and made it invincible..." (Page 186).

Traits that were glaringly absent in the honor code included fairness, respect and intelligence. The honor code tended to focus more on a person's reputation rather than a person's actual personality and nature. Fairness was absent as the south emphasized maintaining a high ranking rather than equality and fairness. Intelligence was also glaringly absent because the south was very passionate about government and control. If more of the citizens became educated, they would have more of a reason to revolt since they would be more knowledgeable.
