When children’s knowledge and skills are connected within one subject then integration is happening (etext). For example:

When using the integrated approach, assessment is vital as it is used to assess the learning of knowledge and skills of students which not only will assist teachers with their planning, it will also help students to develop their knowledge and skills in different learning and subject areas. Assessment also assists students in monitoring their own learning and can help to identify ways of improving their understandings and abilities (etext). The Australian Curriculum identifies the importance of assessment so that teachers can make judgements using the assessment data they collect about the quality of learning that each student demonstrates (ACARA)

Summative assessment occurs when teachers evaluate students learning and progress and this can take place at different key points throughout a unit of work, end of term or semester. Teachers will use the evidence from students work to make conclusions about each students learning which is based on the goals and achievements originally set out by the teacher. This type of assessment can be highly effective, as provides teachers and students a good overview of what they knew before and what they know now which is highly beneficial when using an integrated learning approach (Board of Studies NSW, 2012). Summative assessment within an integrated curriculum may include:

End of topic tests or quizzes

Presentation

Student portfolios

Formative assessments are considered to be a vital part of student’s everyday learning and helps to serve as practice for students, similar to meaningful homework, as well as helping develop their knowledge and skills in different areas. Formative assessments allow teachers to check for understanding along the way which will help to guide teachers and their decision making about future lessons and different pedagogical strategies (scholastic). Assessments within an integrated curriculum can take a variety of forms including

Anecdotal records

Student journals – this can help students have a better understanding of how they learn

Questioning

Open-ended questions

Checklists
