         <description><![CDATA[<div>The New Deal gave the nation its first public housing but continued on with segregation leaving these soldiers black colleagues homeless. All this happened due to the lack of housing after the Great Depression. Public housing under Roosevelt was considered even more segregated, the head of Public Work Administration Harold Ickes was pulled into controversy for allowing African American take one-third of the units. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Integration peaked in the 1880s. This is expressed when Rothstein explains how the end of reconstruction in 1877 lead to an increase in segregation in the south. The laws. Those laws enforced companies to deny basic rights to African Americans to try and suppress them, these groups where white supremacists like the read shirts.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Woodrow Wilson and Herbert Hoover caused tension between the U.S. had a capitalist structure and the Soviet Union was a communist country. The author goes into depth about housing discrimination  and the idea of a "patriotic" American one must be white, legally employed, and middle class or above. This definition was exclusionary because it emphasized the governments desire in building a homogenous white nation. This leads to part 2 of chapter 4. Ruthstein goes into depth about the government  stagey in blocking people of color from owning homes.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>To this day segregation still exists in many places although it may not be as public as it once was. Today a big way were segregated is through our schooling systems and how certain kids from different neighborhoods are funneled into different school districts.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The FHAs reasons for denying financing to African Americans was due to white homeowners feeling the property value in white neighborhoods would diminish. In the end the FHAs failure to insure mortgages caused their property value to drop.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) tried helping black Ford workers find housing in areas so dominantly populated by white home owners. Nobody allowing African American people to move in is what pushed AFSC to try building their own homes, eventually being successful after meeting with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Throughout chapter 9 we read about Frank returning to Richmond, California where he helps his friend, a retired African American World War 2 veteran, move into the house he wanted to buy on his own. When the veteran moved in to the house the neighbors reacted by setting up mobs in the street to try and intimidate the old war veteran out of his own house and neighborhood simply because of the color of his skin. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In chapter 10 Rothstein talks about the wage gap in American and the different ways the government would intentionally expand the gap throughout the twentieth century by switching up different policies. In part three of this chapter, Rothstein also brings up Franklin D Roosevelt’s 1935 National Labor Relations Act and how it only made it illegal for unions to discriminate against people of color for three months before the American Federation of Labor had the law removed.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In chapter 11 I read about the civil rights laws that were passed in the 50s and 60s as well as Rothstein’s ideas on how to help fix the issue with discrimination such as school segregation, hiring discrimination, equal enforcement of laws, and equal voting rights. This chapter also goes into depth about how White people’s houses historically show that they increase in value almost 3x more than those of African American families.</div>]]></description>

He goes further into detail about the many negatives of segregation when he brings up the effect it had on children by depriving them of exposure to diversity.</div>]]></description>
