Question #26: To Jeanne, what is surprising about the trip back to Los Angeles?

Emily In chapter 19 I believe that Jeanne is surprised that she didn't witness hate on the drive back home. She even talks about how it feels like a time machine: "And yet, on our six-hour drive south, we seemed to have passed through a time machine, as if, in March of 1942 one had lifted his foot to take a step, had set it down in October of 1945, and was expected to just keep on walking, with all intervening time erased" (137). In her experience, this quote tells us how she feels like nothing has changed, she is feeling like there would be more noise and hate, but it doesn't feel like that at all for her. We must understand though that this is only how it feels for Jeanne during the car ride. Another specific example of the wording Jeanne uses is: "In our isolated world we had over prepared for shows of abuse" (137). I think the wording she uses there is very meaningful and really gives us a squint of how it feels for her. Overall we can understand that she feels surprised by this because she is thinking of a different outcome during this drive back to Los Angeles.

When Jeanne and her family were released from the camp she would try to suppress her memories of the interment camp but know that she had visited the camp, "[she] no longer wanted to lose it or to have those years erased. Having found it, [she] could say what you can only say when you've truly come to know a place: Farewell" (140). After the visit Jeanne was able to lessen the sense of hollowness she has been feeling and come to terms with how the camp has impacted her life.

Jeanne's double impulse is to be invisible and to be accepted by others. Jeanne's experiences at Manzanar, the camp where her family was forced to live kind of like jail institutionalized, which started the whole impulse of her wanting to be invisible/to disappear. She felt that her Japanese identity made her a mark for prejudice and discrimination, nd to shield herself from all of that she grew the desire to want to disappear/be invisible. Although Jeanne wanted to be invisible, she also wanted to be accepted by her community. She wanted to prove that she is valid enough like the other people in her class.

Jeanne's double impulse is "the urge to disappear and the desperate desire to be acceptable" (114.) Jeanne feels that people will not see her for who she is, but just as an "oriental." She understands that because of the evacuation people have an idea and stereotype of Japanese people. Jeanne also wants to prove she isn't different then the other kids in her class. She excels in everything she is allowed to participate in and wants to join and take part in the "normal" activities all the other kids enjoy.

Throughout chapters 14, 15, 16 and 17, young people like Eleanor, Shig and Woody leave the camp as soon as possible. The Nisei believe that anything is better then camp. Jeannie tells up, "Eleanor and Shig [are] the first of my family to leave... The next to go [is] Woody who, in August 1944, had been drafted" (88). However, their hopes of a better outside world are false. In some cases, some people ended up returning to the camp. Jeannie says, "Eleanor, pregnant, could find neither work nor money enough to pay for having a baby. She [can't] stay in Reno, and she [can't] go with Shig to the army's training camp in Louisiana, so she voluntarily re-entered camp" (86). The people who stay are the ones who are too old to start over and those who are too young to be on their own. Again, Jeannie states, "By the end of 1944 about 6,000 people [remain] and those, for the most part [are] the aging and the young... To most of the Nisei, anything [looks] better than remaining in camp. For most of their parents, just the opposite was true" (88). This shows that they understand what the outside world is really going to look like and wanted to wait it out as long as possible.

She got embarrassed by her dad proudly bowing for Jeanne, but nobody knew what he was doing causing Jeanne to feel embarrassed of her parents. Jeanne said, "I wanted to scream. I wanted to slide out of sight..." (120). In this whole dilemma, Jeanne tells us how she wanted to cry out from all the pent up emotions that her parents are making her get.

Question #15: 15. What leads to the ringing of the mess hall bells? What’s occurs at the Resevoir shack?

The ringing of the mess hall bells in chapter nine is caused by the riots. To show their frustration, the demonstrators ring to the bells for hours after the riots end; "What I recall vividly are the bells that began to toll late that night. After dispersing, some of the demonstrators organized shifts, and kept them tolling all over camp" (55). In chapter ten, Jeanne's brother in law Kaz, is a foreman of a reservoir maintenance detail. Kaz's crew is confronted by the military police, as they are suspicious of the Japanese due to the current situation. The military police remain suspicious before they confirm that they're mistaken. "The reservoir crew didn't blink until he returned with the clearance half an hour later. They stood there watching the three jittery privates, who had backed up against the opposite wall..." (57). This whole situation can show how biased and fearful people were of the Japanese during this time period.

Jeanne describes how they made their barracks more livable: "We built furniture out of scrap lumber, filled cracks in the walls with tin can lids, and hung curtains for privacy." People also found ways to form a community through schools and activities. Jeanne, for example, took ip baton twirling and practiced constantly, showing how even children found way to cope and feel normal.

Devin Vudmaska Question #27: Why do the Wakatsukis have trouble finding a place to stay in Los Angeles?

After leaving Manzanar, the Wakatsukis find it difficult for many reasons. One reason is that the Wakatsuki family is part Japanese and due to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, many Japanese-Americans are facing prejudice and are fighting claims that they are "not American". Many Japanese-Americans of this time had to completely disown their Japanese heritage for people to even see a sliver of an American. This prejudice caused many Japanese-Americans to find it difficult to find housing or business after leaving their camps. Another factor that played into the difficulties of finding housing was that there simply weren't any available homes that they could buy. This lack of housing caused the Wakatsukis to find a place that wasn't exactly in Los Angeles. It wasn't a very big house, it wasn't very pretty, but it was a house, with rooms, and privacy, and that is all the Wakatsukis wanted after being in Manzanar for so long.

The joyous event that occurs for the family is the birth of Eleanor's child. Eleanor is Jeanne's oldest sister who gives birth to a baby boy. This event was bittersweet because the birth represents hope as well as a sense of restorement in the family. This is done by bringing Mama and Papa closer together, giving them relief and happiness. However, this also means that this baby boy will grow up at the camp. The camp life is very hard and since they have no idea how long they will be living there, the possibility of this place being all the baby knows as home is scary for them. According to Jeanne, her Mama and Papa are: "weeping with relief and happiness, talking quietly, just the two of them" (87). This quote shows the new found bond between Mama and Papa. They had also been fearful of Eleanor giving birth in the camp due to what has happened with their sister-in-law. According to Jeanne, "In the case of a sister-in-law of ours, who [has] miscarried and hemorrhaged" (86). She ended up bleeding to death which explains everyone's fear of birth at camp.
