Many people considered it to be abiding the U.S. saying, "liberty and equality for all" when they weren't actually being fair to slaves.
Some of the people who were in the most support of abolishing slavery was, William Lloyd Garrison, Angelina and Sarah Grimke, the former escaped slaves Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth, and Harriet Tubman who was the conductor of the underground railroad. The underground railroad wasn't necessarily underground, it was just kept as a secret. Women didn't have the right to vote, hold office, all their money earned went to their husband, any property they had a a single women went to the husband, and there was no law to protect women being abused by their husbands.
