We understand that everyone is busy juggling family, work and social life with your study.  Here are a few tips and resources to help you succeed in your study this TP.

Spend time checking that you have time to complete the number of units you are planning each TP. Each undergraduate unit recommends 10-12.5 hours per week, and placements require more than this.  Studying 4 units at once is the equivalent of a full time job!

Check all of your assignment dates at the beginning of the TP. Often assignments are due on the same day. There are some great tips on time management on the student portal.  The study planners (Links to an external site.) , especially the interactive one, are great ways to get organised. You will also find information on positive study habits (Links to an external site.) including workshops, time management and motivation tips. 

Reassess your study load once you have checked assignments and filled in your study planner.  Sometimes it is better to do one less unit per TP, rather than putting yourself under extra stress and the possibility of not completing the unit.  

Start working on your assignments early – at least 2 weeks before the due date and aim to be up to the polishing stage by the weekend before the due date.  Make sure you plan in a buffer for those unexpected events that tend to crop up the weekend before the due dates. 

48 hour extensions are available through the assignment information tab.

Any extension that is longer that 48 hours requires supporting evidence.

The following resources will assist you with completing this assignment:  

1. Brief introduction

2. Identify a specific link to a sub-outcome under Outcome 5 from the EYLF or a content description from the Australian curriculum: English (or a state equivalent) that you think will promote children’s speaking and listening skills.

3. Identify a specific age group within the early years that you would like to focus on for this assignment. For example, 3 year olds in a pre-kindergarten room or 6-7 year olds in Year 1. It must be within either an early childhood setting (birth to 5 years of age), or an early years primary school setting (5 to 8 years of age)

4 .Describe a learning experience or an activity that educators can use to support your chosen age group’s speaking and listening skills. 

5. Identify or use a prop in your presentation to provide further context e.g. a book, a puppet, visual aids etc.

6. Explain how the learning experience or activity can support children’s speaking and listening skills for your chosen age group.

7. Explain how your learning experience or activity will promote the learning of your chosen age group and support them in achieving the sub-outcome.

8. Present a rationale to explain why it is important for educators to include the teaching of speaking and listening skills in their literacy program. In your rationale, you must make a specific reference to a relevant theory to help support your statements.

9 Conclusion- short to sum up key point.

Here are a few important things to ensure you include in your presentation:

have a voice recording alongside some PowerPoint slides.

✏️ There is no spoken word limit. (400-500 words is approximately how many spoken words can fit into the time limit)

✏️ Make sure you include an introduction and conclusion in the time limit. These need to be quite brief given the time limit.

✏️ Ensure you presentation is within the allowable time limit. Anything past the time limit cannot be included. This may mean your conclusion might be missed, which will impact criterion 1.

✏️ Ensure you orally cite your references within your presentation. This shows us your research.

✏️Use the full name for the oral citation the first time (Australian Curriculum Assessment...) , then you can use the acronym. 

✏️ You only need to include the Content Description or Outcome code, you do not need to supply the full description of CD. (Some of these are really long and the time is tight.)

✏️ Ensure you upload your Reference List separately as a Word document. Use a range of scholarly resources. Ensure you are using the APA format. Remember, there is a minimum of 5 references required. 

✏️When linking your learning experience with the curriculum - use the AC's Content Descriptors for students from Foundation - Year 2 (5-8yrs). Use the EYLF's Outcomes for (children 0-5yrs).

This is reflected in the Science: Biological Sciences, foundation year level of the Australian Curriculum (AC), where students investigate how ‘living things have basic needs, including food and water’ (ACARA, 2018, ACSSU002, v.8.4).
