The Kalahari desert covers part of South Africa's north. Below the Kalahari desert somewhat in the middle of South Africa runs the Orange river and the Vaal river. To the east lies the the Drakensberg mountains. South Africa's two major vegetation zones are desert scrub and highlands. Along the coast however there are broad leaf evergreen forest and chaparral vegetation zones.

British begin arriving in 1820. The discoveries of diamonds and gold in the late 1860s create in increased interest in colonizing South Africa.
In 1899 the Boer War breaks out, the British unsatisfied with their presence in South Africa's government and wanting a claim on the riches of the country. The British win the war in 1902, and South Africa lost it's independence. Through much of the 1900s Blacks are discriminated and segregated in South Africa. After a century of protests Blacks are finally starting to receive the privileges withheld from them, but over a century of discrimination and segregation will take time to recover from.
Independence
South Africa became an independent nation on May 31st, 1961.

     Through most of South Africa's history blacks were segregated from white colonists and excluded from the government and voting. They were taken advantage of by receiving less opportunities in education to insure lots of cheap labor for South Africa. In recent years blacks gained the right to vote and more education opportunities are now being provided.
   Controversies between people
     The Government of South Africa is now requiring businesses to hire people such as blacks, coloreds, Asians, women and the disabled when filling jobs.
