How do I become a director of photography?- People come into it through a variety of routes. Some start as a camera trainee and work their way up through the roles outlined above. Others become DoPs through being an assistant director first. Others come up through the lighting department. The best way for me is to start as a camera trainee I think, because I can learn on the job and get better while working.

.What’s a director of photography good at?-

Photography: have an eye for composition, know how to tell a story through a shot, understand camera and lighting techniques, know how to use them to affect emotions

Technical knowledge of cameras: have an in-depth understanding of all motion picture equipment, cameras, lens, monitors and lights

Editing knowledge: understand the post-production work flow, have a good eye for colour in the editing process

Making decisions: think quickly, often under pressure

Organisation: plan, know how to do things and how long it will take, get the right kit and crew, manage the budget, think about logistical and artistic considerations at the same time

Communication: ensure everyone in the team knows what’s expected, work closely with the grips and the gaffer, lead the team and resolve conflicts in situations that can sometimes be stressful

. Publicists create the ‘buzz’ that surrounds the release of a film. They get the critics talking.

. Who does a publicist work with?- Publicists work with cinemas, studio executives, members of the film's cast and crew, film critics, film press and film festival representatives and other people promoting the film, such as the Marketing manager.

. How do I become a publicist?- Publicists have have worked in the film or TV industry for many years before they get to the position. There’s no set career path, but common routes to this role include public relations, journalism, marketing and film production. A good way to start for me would be as an assistant in the marketing department of a distribution, production, or film sales company or TV channel.

.What’s a publicist good at?-

Understanding the media: have good contacts in the film and media industries, know the needs of journalists in print, TV, radio and online

Writing: write the promotional story of the film, create press packs, devise release plans

Knowledge of the film market: identify the core audience for a film, know how to reach them and excite them, be aware of box office figures, viewing figures and the film trends

Flexibility: thrive in changing situations, enjoy spontaneity

Persuasion: network with the influencers in the film industry, such as press, critics and programmers, and pitch and convince them of the strength of the film

.Grips make sure that what the director wants to achieve on a shoot is possible. While directors think of the artistry of the shots, grips work out how they are going to move the cameras to make that happen.

. Who does a grip work with?- Key grip, Best boy grip, Dolly grip, crane grip, jibs grip, Grip trainee.

. How do I become a grip?- Unlike many roles in film and TV drama, there’s an established route to becoming a grip. Bectu, the media and entertainment union, has a dedicated Grips Branch which holds a list of certified grips. For me to get onto that list I will need 2 years experience as a grip
then take a Level 2 Diploma in Professional Competence for Grips. This will mean I can get onto the list of certified grips.
When I've been qualified for another two or three years, I'll take a Level 3 Diploma in Professional Competence for Advanced Grips.

.What’s a grip good at?-

Knowledge of cameras and supports: understand the technical requirements of cameras and of the baseplates, dollies, cranes and jib arms on which they are mounted

Innovation: think quickly of practical solution to problems, adapt equipment to particular environments

Communication: listen to the director of photography, be able to explain and share information with actors and the rest of the crew, especially when under pressure

Organisation: schedule the equipment hire and recruiting of crew

Lifting: know how to lift safely, have stamina

I've gained a lot of experience with filming with the projects. I've filmed the suspense scene project with a group and documentary on my own so I've had experience listening to what the director wants and try make the filming exactly how he wants it and sometimes bring my own ideas for angles and shots if I think it will look better. Also with documentary planned all the shots and did everything myself. I taught myself a lot about being DoP as well for example the main thing I learnt was to plan all the shots before arriving location , set. Because I thought I did a good job but when I arrived filming day I changed all the shots because they didn't make sense and I didn't concentrate enough making the shot list before hand. Also just realizing how important every aspect of filming is and if one of the aspects isn't right the whole video will fail, for example the exposure, iso, what type of shot it is e.g. medium, close-up , extreme close-up , Aperture, focal length and one of the most important aspects, the light! if the lights isn't right , doesn't matter what you film, you wont be able to see it so these projects made me realize how important all the aspects together are. Also to be a DoP it's very important to know the basics of editing so you know how all the clips you film fit and cut together. I've edited all the films we have done so I think I know the basics good so that defiantly helps me with my filming.
Also making decisions, through the projects I have learnt how to make decisions good through pre production and production , because if something changes between pre production and production, I have to be ready to make good decisions quickly.

In the last project I made a website and making websites are vey important in Publicist so from the website project I briefly know how to make a website. And I know how to make it better next time and what to improve for example add the cinema dates in the website so people can buy the tickets straight after watching the trailer. Also add text and information on the trailer.

I've gained a lot of experience with this through the projects because I did the lighting for the suspense scene with my group and my documentary on my own so I realized how important the lighting is , I think the fact I was filming as well made me realize how important it was. In the projects I was responsible for setting and striking lighting equipment on set. Also responsible for keeping equipment organized. And that is a grip job so I had the best experience to be a grip I could've had out of these projects. Especially with my documentary because it taught me a lot because I filmed and did the lighting all independently so had to teach myself if I didn't know how to do anything because there was no one there to ask.

Ive used a lot of feedback and opinions on my projects. Gained feedback on the idea , half way through the filming and then the reflection at the end. So I’m using the feedback from the film to help with the next film. Also reasearch is one of the most important part of making a film so research helped me a lot for example to see other films that are similar, look at how other directors film, what angles they use. Also you can look at films similar to yours and see the suggested age to watch.
