         <description><![CDATA[<div>After Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on the bus, Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders decided this was the time to end segregation on Montgomery buses. They called for a boycott that lasted for over a year which lead to the end of segregation on buses all around the country. This nonviolent boycott brought national recognition for Dr. King. This also made him one of the most influential leaders of the Civil Rights movement. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested 29 times for misdemeanor offenses for his civil rights protesting.  He also spent short periods of time in jail and had to pay many fines. Dr. King was not the only African American who faced jail time during the civil rights movement. Thousands of African Americans were arrested and sent to jail , too. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>On August 28, 1963, over 250,000 people attended the biggest civil rights demonstration of its time. The purpose was to bring together all civil rights organizations and demand for full civil rights, jobs, higher minimum wage, and an income that was guaranteed. This is where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. This speech is still remembered today and had a great impact on Americans throughout the country. His speech brought more attention to the Civil Rights Movement.  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Dr. King stopped in Memphis to help local sanitation workers, who were on strike. He stayed at the Lorraine Motel and while he was standing on the balcony, he was shot and killed by James Earl Ray. After his death, there were riots in more than 120 cities across the United States. In honor of his death, social programs and other progressive moves were developed.  </div>]]></description>

Gandhi's idea of satyagraha, which means firmness in truth, was what influenced Dr. King's protests. Both Gandhi and King believed in nonviolent civil disobedience.
