Rosa Parks, a remarkable social activist, was honored by the U.S. Congress as the Mother of the Modern Day Civil Rights Movement. Her courageous act of refusing to surrender her seat on a Montgomery bus on December 1, 1955, to racial segregation is widely recognized. Although her leadership during the year long Montgomery bus boycott is well known, it's important to note that Rosa Parks had been an influential community leader and activist for over twelve years before the boycott and continued her activism for five decades thereafter. I have chosen to discuss this about awesome person because of her admiring achievements that forever changed the United States.

Sonia Sotomayor is the third woman to serve on the Supreme Court as a justice. She was born in New York and her parents are from Puerto Rico. Her mother was a nurse and her father a tool worker who passed away when she was only nine. However, this did not stop Sotomayor from making various accomplishments. She became an assistant district attorney who did not allow herself to be disrespected by others. Obama appointed Sotomayor in 2009 and her spot was confirmed by the Senate. Not only is her becoming a justice an accomplishment for women, but for Hispanics, especially for me as a Hispanic American woman who wants to make a difference in society.

Many know her story as she survived a shot to the head by the Taliban in 2012 after she had advocated for women's education. Even after this traumatic experience, Malala continued fighting for educational rights, co-founded the Malala Fund, and co-authored her book "I am Malala." She completed her education and in 2014, won the Nobel Peace Prize, which marked her as the world's youngest winner. She did all of this as a teenager and inspires me because she is a young women who fought for what she believed in.

Madam C. J. Walker, born Sarah Breedlove in 1867, was the first Black woman millionaire in America. She created the "Walker system" of hair care products after experiencing hair loss. Walker built a business empire, selling products directly to Black women and employing beauty culturalists. She used her wealth to fund scholarships and donate to various charities. In my AP biology class we talked about her contribution to the science and chemistry behind the magic of hair proudcts. Walker has allowed black women's hairtype to be ackowleged and represented with her products of curl cremes, to conditoner, and shampoo. Thanks to her I can be able to find and use products for my hairtype.

Alex Morgan is an American soccer player, who is also the captain of a NWSL team known as San Diego Wave. She is very famous for her beautiful looks, but she also has a lot of skill when it comes to soccer, helping the USWNT to two World Cups in a row, in the years 2015 and 2019. The reason why I chose her is because she plays the sport that I love, in the country I was born in, while also helping expanding the love of soccer across the US which is dominated by American Football and Basketball.

While she is mostly known for being Kurt Cobain's wife, she rose to stardom, being on of the only female artists who was a standout during the Seattle Grunge scene. She was known for empowering women and giving them voices with her music, such as with the song "Violet" which is about the responsibility a woman is allowed to have about her sexuality. She also won a NME Icon award in 2020. The reason why I chose her, was because she made music that helped an oppressed group of people at that time, have a voice, and I want to try and do the same.

She received widespread fame and recognition for her efforts in the American Civil War and was one of the first Black women to be invited to the White House. Sojourner Truth was an author, human rights, and women's rights activist. I chose this woman because my middle name was chosen in her honor. She was also an exceptional woman who stood firmly on her beliefs.

Ogla E. Custodio was the first Latina pilot in the United States military. Her journey to becoming a pilot was challenging as many training programs rejected her because she was a women. She graduated from Undergraduate Pilot Training at the top 5% of her class and became the first female instructor of the T-38 supersonic jet plane at multiple bases. Custodio received the 2022 STEM Award from the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, inducted into the Aerospace Hall of Fame, and reach the ranking of Lieutenant Colonel. She is now retired and is currently working with multiple non-profits to advocate for STEM programs for students. I picked Ogla Custodio because she is an inspiration to fellow Latinas-like me-interested in STEM and a reminder to keep persevering to achieve your dreams.

Sally Ride was the first American astronaut and was the youngest American in space during the time of her trip. She boarded the space shuttle Challenger STS-7 with 4 other male astronauts and served as the flight engineer. She launched two communication satellites, operated the shuttle's mechanical arm, and conducted multiple experiments. Some of her accomplishment includes being inducted to the National Women's Hall of Fame, the Aviation Hall of Fame, and the Astronaut Hall of Fame. Additionally, President Obama honored her by awarding her with a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. Sally Ride constantly worked to improve young women in fostering their love in STEM by creating Imaginary Lines, now know as Sally Ride Science, to offer workshops for students grade 3-12. She also wrote seven children's books revolving around space exploration. I chose Sally Ride because she has inspired me to continue working in increasing the resources for young women in developing their interest in STEM.

Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was Queen of the United Kingdom, married to King George VI from 1936 to 1952 at the time of King George VI's passing. Throughout her time as Queen, she became a central figure that led the monarchy to principles adopted from Queen Mary of engagement between the public and the monarchy itself. She became a critical person that helped boost morale during the Second World War, at a time in which the United Kingdom was fighting Germany on all fronts on its own. At a time when the government advised the Royal Family to leave for Canada while the war carried out, the Queen Mother famously stated "The children will not leave unless I do. I shall not leave unless their father does, and the King will not leave the country in any circumstances whatsoever." This boosted the morale of the British people who at the time were being bombarded by the Blitz and German aircraft. In fact, during the German bombings on the United Kingdom, they successfully bombed a part of Buckingham Palace, the residence of the monarch and of their family. For many, that would be the sign to leave, however, the Queen Mother and the King chose to remain steadfast with their resolution to remain by their People's side. This only grew the British cause against the Germans, as it was then felt that Germany had touched a part of the United Kingdom that was sacrosanct. It was because of this resolution of the Queen Mother, that the German leader at the time referred to her as "The most dangerous woman in Europe." After the war, she continued her public service, even after King George VI died, serving faithfully until her passing in 2002, having lived for 101 years. It is for these reasons of devotion and duty that I chose to honor her, they are admirable qualities, especially when they are put in the context of major events in history that could've been shaped differently had these qualities not been unveiled.

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was initially not expected to carry the burden of being the heir to the throne of the United Kingdom and the British Empire. However, that changed following her uncle's abdication of the throne that then passed on to her father in 1936. As the eldest of two daughters, she was in line to become The Queen. During the final years of the Second World War, she served in the military, helping the cause as a mechanic. At the age of 21, she made a pledge to the British Empire stating: "I declare before you all, that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service, and to the service of our great Imperial Family, to which we all belong." This resounded across the Empire and became the principle upon which she served her people until her passing. This pledge was not expected to have the significance that it did, but that changed when King George VI unexpectedly passed in 1952, leaving the then Princess to find out her father had died and she had become The Queen while abroad, as she was undertaking a Commonwealth Tour across the British Empire. She was crowned in 1953. Her reign saw great advancements in modern society. She modernized the monarchy and sponsored many organizations throughout her life that helped minorities and aimed at solving social issues. She became the first British monarch to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Across the UK and the Commonwealth, celebrations rung out in Thanksgiving to the person who had become a constancy in people's lives across the globe. She had profound effects beyond her own country and was known for her steadfast principle of putting duty first before personal indulgences; something that Queen Mary, her grandmother, had passed onto her. It became these qualities and stability that she provided, that sent the world into mourning the week of September 8th, 2022. 3 months after her Platinum Jubilee, she passed away peacefully at Balmoral Castle. Across the globe, people payed tributes to Her Late Majesty, even coming to attend the days of mourning in the United Kingdom. World leaders payed their own tributes and joined the United Kingdom during Her Late Majesty's Funeral at Westminster Abbey. Monarchs across Europe and the rest of the world also came to pay their tributes to their Head, the person who had reigned longer than any of them. She reached an amazing 70 years on the throne. She was honoured by the military, the people, and the world. Thus, her reign came to an end on the 19th of September, 2022. This marking an era of human advancements, and true devotion and service from her. Few time periods of history are named after great people. Historians rarely see an era needing be named by one person. However, this era will be marked as the Second Elizabethan Age for all it saw. It is with this that I also would say that although historians may not yet agree, she is already: Elizabeth The Great.

Cleopatra (69 BC - 30 BC) was the last pharaoh of ancient Egypt. She was highly educated, fluent in multiples languages, and renowned for her intelligence and wit. She influenced Roman politics at a crucial period and was especially known for her alliances with powerful Roman leaders, including Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. Her relationship with these men were both political and personal as she bore children with both of them. Shocking to me, is the age gap between Cleopatra and these two men. Cleopatra was 21 when she first met Julius Caesar (52). They had a child and remained together until Caesar's death 3 years later. She and Antony had a 14 year age difference. She is also famous for her and Antony's dramatic suicide after Antony's defeat at the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE because they'd rather do that than be captured by the forces of Octavian, a.k.a Augustus. She is remembered as one of the most iconic figures of ancient history. I chose to write about this person because I've always found history interesting for as long as I didn't have to get graded on it or had to commit to studying it.
