Prisoners' use of communications technology can both alleviate (through digital connections with outside world) and exacerbate this (by replacing in-person visits). There is also the problem of private companies exploiting imprisoned people and their families by charging exorbitant amounts for communications like email and video calls. Namely, that it can help to work through the backlog of cases in the court system. It can also help victims/witnesses by allowing more of them to provide their statements via CCTV footage instead of having to face everyone in court.
