Discovering Mitosis and Meiosis

The batik shown here proves that Buang had observed chromosomes undergoing mitosis but also meiosis. It is very likely that Buang had a basic microscope, made of bamboo and a drop of water, or maybe glass. It is easy to imagine that he could observe onion (bawang) cells, using a simple natural die which increases the contract in the cells. The compartments drawn on the batik in effect look like the cells seen in an onion skin.

It is likely that having made this discovery, Buang enlisted his wife to make this batik as a way of representing what he had seen, and to use as communication too to explain what he had seen in the onion.

Durians can be used to make electricity

In this drawing, we see how Buang used the inside and the outside of the durian skin as the 2 different poles of an electric circuit. Using copper wire and a magnet, it is possible to start an simple motor, which in turn, if slightly adapted, can be used to move air efficiently: a durian can action a fan!

This drawing doesn’t have much details or notes with it but shows that Buang understand that something invisible is moving, a force, which can be a source of energy.

The seeds of this tree (Shorea macrophylla) are very common in the primary rainforest of borneo. These very tall trees go through mass fruiting once every few years and release their seeds from the height of the very tall trees. The fruits, equipped of « wings » will rotate like helicopters, descending cracefully and slowly to the ground. They might be carried by the wind and end up further away from the mother tree.

In this series of sketches, we see that Buang looked at the seeds carefully to understand how they rotate.

In this drawing, Buang shows that he tried to understand how the shape of the seeds’ wings can play a role in the movement of the seed as it descends, rotating, from the top of the tree.

In this drawing , Buang perhaps used a thin slice of onion as a specimen to observe cells. He placed it under a thin piece of glass with a droplet of water over it to magnify the specimen.

Buang found colourful songbirds in the forests and noticed the songs sung by different coloured birds were different both rhythmically and tonally. He wondered if he took the chick from a different songbird family, and hatched it in another, will the “adopted” songbird sing a different song?
