I explored the 'Fine Acts' link and checked out "12 Black Artists/ 24 Protest Posters" where I came upon this typeface design by Kevin Adams. It's free to download and can be printed and used. In a clean retro style, this poster celebrates a rejection of institutionalized racism and greed. The high contrast black and white design, unshakeable horizontal orientation and gleaming drop shadow give an almost sculptural feeling to this font. Three words, two colors and a strong design pack a powerful message. I've included the link to the image and a quote from the artist below.

https://thegreats.co/artworks/fight-the-power

Quote from Kevin Adams
“Much of my personal work finds inspiration in African American music. African American music has helped to uplift souls, express pain, and give social commentary. The impact of African American music and its importance to the Black experience, to the cultural heritage of all Americans cannot be escaped, regardless of race or origin. These words have personal significance to me and are timely in my message.” Kevin Adams

I found Native on the Puffin Cultural Forums. This art work caught my attention because, what it represents. Jack wants to represent the struggles of being a Native America in today's time. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for them to try and keep their traditions alive after all that happened to them. We had destroyed everything they had, and forced to leave their traditions behind. I really like how colorful this artwork is too. All the green just makes me imagine how full of life it was before all the construction we have now.

link: puffinculturalforums.org

I came across this painting while skimming through the website the Puffin Cultural Forum. I chose this specific image because it reminded me of my late grandfather Jack who served in the Vietnam War. Also lead me to think of the Forrest Gump movie when Forrest went into the war. I'm not too fond of the Vietnam War but I do know it was brutal on the soldiers and there was a movement going on for 'Peace & Love' and no wars. This artwork was put on display in Nina Talbot's exhibition called, “Veterans.” Talbot’s vision for crafting paintings of men and women who served in the military from World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan, is to “reveal how each individual veteran forever lives in the shadow of war…” Some of this information was found on the website Puffin Cultural Forum.

Link: https://www.puffinculturalforum.org/vietnam-on-my-mind/

Black Lives Matter (series, 5/5) by Hust Wilson

1. Describe why you chose the artwork and what it means to you:

As I researched and explored the 4 different contemporary artist activist sites that were provided, the site that caught my attention the most was the "Fine Acts link - A PlayGround for Social Change". As I clicked on this tab, I came across the category "12 Black Artists/24 Protest Posters". Upon entering this category, I acknowedged the second photo that was present, which is the one I have chosen to present above. Anyone person(s) has access to this art piece and they have the option to either print it out, or they can share it amongst others and/or friends on any social media site.

This piece is important to me because the Black Lives Movement has been an ongoing social issue in today's world. This is a movement that has been driven across hundreds and thousands of people arcross the globe. The BLM gives people a chance to lift up their voices, and create an uproar. This is an important movement where people are coming together and protest for justice, not for answers. This unification creates solidarity amongst all. This movement created a shift in America, and I am here to state that this is a very important message to always remember and be willing to discuss. We all should know what the BLM is, and why it is so important to learn about, if you do not know. Everyone is tired of all the deaths that have occured throughout the years, yet justice is still not being served.

The purpose of BLM is to hold police accountable for their actions, not hurt them. At a point in time, there was some backlash on the BLM stating that this was a movement that was becoming known as a hate group. However, this was never the case. News casters, amongst others, just took their voices as the interpretation of being a misunderstood message. This movement is here to stay. Let us not confuse this for just "a moment that occured". Let's continue to come forward with our voices in regards to the Black Lives Movement and unite as one. Let's be part of this national organization, and continue on spreading the realness of this social issue.

As you can notice within the art piece, the words "Black Lives Matter" are presented across the sad black women's neck, having the representation of her being choked, and not being able to speak. This is how all African Americans must feel anytime another black person dies for no reason, and no justice is being served. Imagine being choked to the point where you cannot breathe. This is not uncommon anymore for police officers to just casually apply strong force to a black person's neck until they can't breathe, then unfortunately, they die. This also refers back to the ongoing saying amongst the Black Lives Matter movement of "I can't breathe."

This art piece tells an entire story, and I only mentioned part of it. As the old saying goes... "a picture is worth a thousand words." Whether it's a photograph, a painting, drawing, sculpture, etc...every piece of art work has its own story. Thus, this image I provided above, tells an important one. This is why I resonated with this art piece, and what it truly means to me.

2.

As I was searching throughout the provided links, I knew I wanted to pick a piece focusing on climate change. I've been taking an environmental science class this semester and my eyes have been opened to how much we humans are destroying the Earth. Then, I remembered a photographer my professor mentioned - Chris Jordan. He is discussed in ArtStories in the Environmental Artists section, though not a featured political artist. I chose this photograph because it bluntly shows the daily lives of innocent animals and how our plastic consumption is effecting them. We have a beautiful, green grassy landscape but our focal point is the dead bird - its stomach filled with plastic contents. On Chris Jordan's website he says, "These birds reflect back an appallingly emblematic result of the collective trance of our consumerism and runaway industrial growth. Like the albatross, we first-world humans find ourselves lacking the ability to discern anymore what is nourishing from what is toxic to our lives and our spirits. Choked to death on our waste, the mythical albatross calls upon us to recognize that our greatest challenge lies not out there, but in here". Every plastic bottle, moisturizer, or salad box is thrown away and though we might not see the effects of our consumptions, animals who did not build a society on disposable products immediately suffer the consequences. It can be upsetting to see the truth of what we are doing to our environment but Jordan is photographing our reality in a blunt but gruesomely beautiful way. I can't look away but at the same time I want to. It inspires me to change my habits.

Artist: Chris Jordan
Website: https://www.beautyemerging.com/ and https://www.theartstory.org/movement/environmental-art/

During the pandemic, i've took more time to really think about why people of color are treated so differently especially by cops and people who may feel superior. It was very common for people to feel angry and use hate speech to try and show how they felt. This image is a great way to show that we are all the same no matter our skin tone. We are all human and capable of using love instead of hate.

https://fineacts.co/love-speech-sprint

Beat by Maksim Stoimenov (drummer) and Peruna Keremidchieva (developer), produced by Fine Acts.

https://fineacts.co/beat

The two creators rented an apartment to see how long it would take for a noise complaint to come in. The creators of this installment, wanted to do a social experiment with seeing how long their fellow neighbors would respond to loud noises. In doing this, they were imitating the shouts of a victim of domestic abuse and the screams of the victims. If a neighbor is willing to respond to someone playing the drums loudly, they surely could do the same for someone screaming for help.

Domestic abuse is a big issue in India, and is commonly seen in Indian households. The reality is that domestic abuse is not normally, and no kid should have to grow up watching any issue of that kind. The cries of domestic abuse victims must be heard, it is time for cultures globally to understand the hitting their wives or children is not okay anymore. Violence does not create or install reason, there is no reason to hit or yell at someone who them not understanding what the other person is asking if them. As the generations progress, we have the power to break the cycle and create a new one. One were the future children of immigrant parents, do not have to be scared to approach their parents with an issue that they might not like, in fear that they might get hit. Where wives are free to dress how they please, and not feel suffocated by their husbands constantly watching their every move. The installation BEAT brings awareness to breaking the cycle.

Her projects aim to provide concept-driven images like this one. I chose this piece to touch on the topic of climate change. To me this illustration means that in order to save our wildlife, our forests, and our people, we need to take things into our own hands and work towards a cleaner more sustainable lifestyle. The title "In Our Hands" is a solution on how we humans can help our planet. No one else is going to help our planet return back to normal but us, so it's quite literally "In Our Hands" to do something about this problem before its too late and the damage is irreversible.

https://thegreats.co/artworks/in-our-hands

The reason I chose this artwork in particular is because it is a great demonstration of what can happen to our planet Earth if we don't take action now. There has to be more of an awareness of climate change. It is a very common subject yet it doesn't seem like people are taking matters into it. This image made me feel worried of what our planet could look like in the future, destroyed, with not many animals, trees, contaminated air etc. Slowly we are ending with the beauty of our planet Earth, if no effort is made to make it better, a time will come when nothing can be done, and many will regret the decisions they are making now. Let's keep our planet Earth looking like the left side of the artwork, not the right. It's possible if we are all corporate.

Artist: Joana Campinas

Title: Two Possible Futures

Project: Artists for Climate

https://thegreats.co/artworks/two-possible-futures

I have a loved one who is on the spectrum and is high functioning. I chose this because this is awareness to every human being out there. Many consider autism as a sickness, it's not. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a group of conditions characterized by difficulty in social functioning and repetitive behaviors or stereotyped interests. Yet, creations like this self portrait representation was created a artist that is on the spectrum. Look at all the details with in the color scheme blending, the artist chose the primary colors with contrast browns and blacks to bring out details.
Mural Pledge (Future WITH Climate Action)

This is a mural in Austin, Texas, U.S., that I found on Fine Acts; it is part of the project Countdown (which I found by clicking on “Artists for Countdown” on the homepage of Fine Acts’ Webpage). The mural was created by the artists Lope Gutierrez-Ruiz and Michu Benaim Steiner of In-House International, with the help of Kimie Flores. Named the Mural Pledge, it was painted with thermochromic (heat sensitive) paints that change color when the temperature changes. Specifically, some images on this mural are one color in temperatures below 77 degrees Fahrenheit and another color in temperatures above 77 degrees Fahrenheit. This allows the mural to show two different scenes: a future without climate action and a future with climate action. The scenes of a future without climate action portrays a nature scene defiled by garbage, toxic chemicals, and a dead bird. The scenes of a future with climate action shows the same nature scene, however, this time it is untouched by the effects of climate change.

I chose this artwork because I was impressed by the artists’ use of thermochromic paints. I feel that these paints give the mural an extra element as it speaks out about how the temperature of the earth is changing. For me, Mural Pledge communicates both caution and optimism as it shows what will happen if we do nothing about climate change and what is possible if we start taking action.

I decided on this image because I agree to the saying. I grew up in a Mexican household where machismo is highly presented and Ive seen it in my own family. I decided on this image because yes a woman should decide where their place is at. If a woman wants to be independent she is allowed to. No one should tell women that their place is in the kitchen or need to stay at home with the kids. Personally, it should be equally the same between both female and male. Now a days we see women becoming more independent, working on themselves and I think thats important to talk about. Women should be allowed to make decisions on their own and not have to deal with the backlash of what men believe. Although the art is simply it speaks for its self. Its a powerful statement and very controversial.

https://thegreats.co/artworks/the-place-of-a-woman

This artwork means to me is that when I conserve resources I am allowing myself and the people around the world get more resources in the future. Another reason what this artwork means to me is that when conserving resources it tells me we are able to use the resources that we use more longer than before. It is very simple and does not have many words but in a few words it can say a lot. My artwork has a girl and the world hugging and giving love to each other and the words it has are "We are best friends". Which for my perspective means that we should care for the planet earth as someone dear to us and that we should cherish it as a friend, also that we should give love to each other and look out for the good of each other. I know there must be more important situations or movements than this but I think we should take care of the planet earth because it is where we live and if it is dying, then so are we.
Link:
https://thegreats.co/artworks/we-are-best-friends
Artist: Victor Valdez
Tittle: We are Best Friends
Project: Artist for Climate

"Beat." is a social project that experiments on society's reaction to loud noises, it focuses on how long it takes for someone to react to domestic violence which was an idea that came from the domestic violence case of a woman being brutally murdered by her partner in 2017. In this project, Stoimenov and Keremidchieva teamed up to experiment on how long it takes for people to take action when they hear someone being abused from a distance, because in 2017, many neighbors heard the woman's screams but no one ended up searching for the source. They collaborated with domestic abuse survivors and recorded their screams, so when someone is instructed to play the drums, each beat would simulate a scream instead of your ordinary drum beat. I chose this social issue because I am one who does not tolerate domestic abuse, or any abuse at all. I think this is a serious issue that needs to be stopped because there are hundreds, thousands, of people who are stuck in these situations and struggle to get out of them. This image represents a participant who is playing the drums that simulates survivors' screams. As you can see form her face, she is in discomfort, a normal reaction to hearing something unsettling like someone being abused. When I first read about this project, I thought it was a very interesting concept, as it was very different but well thought out. When people react to loud noises they usually cause a fuss and try to figure out where it is coming from in order to stop it, but when it comes to domestic violence not everyone feels the need to find out where it is or who is being hurt. Which I think does not make sense, as you should always try to find the cause of any harm being done, but with domestic violence it is sad to say that not many people want to help or get involved. This is something we as a society should change and realize.

https://fineacts.co/beat

I can relate to this piece of art because we have the same systemic issues just not soldiers but law enforcement. Our rights get violated on a daily basis by profiling children in poverty stricken neighborhoods. When our human rights are violated our future is violated because one of two outcomes will happen, one totalitarians or two anarchy. This postcard is one of many, but I chose this one in particular for the messages that the protestors bring & to really highlight how long racism has been an ongoing issue that seems to lack a resolution. Even now you see people marching for equality, justice & for their voices to be heard because there are still so many issues like bias, profiling & most important the senseless murdering's of black people.

https://thegreats.co/artworks/grow-your-own-future

I chose this particular artwork because of the word future. As an individual who has lots of nephews and nieces and one day wanting to have children of my own, I only want the best for the future children of this world. What we do today will affect the future. I want my children to grow up in a healthy earth, not damaged and destruct-able. Our actions today are affecting the climate for the worst day and day such as mass production, air and water pollution, plastic and agricultural manufacture and the children who are just growing up will have to suffer for it. What we do today and make a better living situation for all the children in this world. This is why we can grow our own future just like how the artist implied through the painting with a small child holding a plant. We can do things like plant more greens and fruits, purchase less plastic, reuse, recycle, and reduce.

Why did I choose the picture of Colin Kaepernick because for me what it means is basically he was doing it for a Cause because this picture might just show his face but the story behind this picture is that he was doing it for a Cause and basically what he was doing is that he plays in the NFL and every time they were doing the national anthem he was kneeling down and people didn't like it because people thought he was going against the people who fought in war and reality know he was kneeling down for the police brutality that it was happening around the world with people of color. What happened to Colin Kaepernick is he eventually lost his job and basically he was facing A lot of controversy Because of him kneeling down but he was doing it for a cause and during this time he also show how the system was broken He was showing that Sports in the United States don't have basically freedom of speech because he was kneeling down offended a lot of people but he explained he was doing it because of police brutality and

also a lot of racism. He was also the first one to kneel down in the NFL.

I also think the NFL shouldn't have told him he can't kneel down because basically they're taking his right away from basically protesting his freedom .

The artist that created this artwork is called Jessica Baker And date this artwork was published is February 15, 2020 And the name for the artwork is called Conversations and project human rights

https://www.puffinculturalforum.org/conversations-2020/

"Vagina Matters"

I chose this particular art piece because well, I'm a girl. This is a book that was created about women and their vagina, but also a sex ed book. The book was created to raise awareness and create a positive mindset and colorful vision about vaginas, especially for younger women to learn about the negative issues such as unwanted pregnancies and STI’s but really get to know their body and how it functions.
I remember once in middle school; my period went through my pants, and it was probably one of the worst days of my little 13-year-old life. I was embarrassed, but in reality, I shouldn't have been because it's normal. I think that raising awareness about periods and vaginas is important because it is not something to be ashamed of.
Home (EN) — Vagina Matters

The exhibition features a series of story-telling paintings by Nina Talbot titled “Veterans.” You can find it at https://www.puffinculturalforum.org/vietnam-on-my-mind/. The reason I choose it is because I am a veteran that has been to war. I know what it is like to go on patrol not knowing if you are your buddies are coming home. Many people have fought in wars before me and many will fight in war after me. I find it fascinating to see their perspective on it.

This art work "Surveillance Camera" made by Ai Wei Wei caught my eyes when I was looking through political art. He came up with this art work because when he was in Bei Jing 2010, Bei Jing police installed security cameras in his home and studio. The camera tracked his room to room, including outside, it was also able to monitor his posts on Twitter and Instagram.
I decided to choice this art work, because seeing Ai Wei Wei came up with an idea of an camera, and have he did not have any personal privacy when he was back in China, where his hometown was, where he was born and raised. I believe that with this we can see how communism does not have any sort of freedom if you do not go by the law. Which also remined me of the article I was reading that now China has surveilled cameras everywhere to watch over their citizen. Of course it sounds safe, camera everywhere there will not be ant violence's, but where the citizens agree to have surveilled cameras everywhere? With this I could see that how having the cameras all over we will lose our own freedom.
https://www.theartstory.org/artist/ai-weiwei/

I chose this artwork because I think it represents an alternative future. There is a lot of violence in the world, but I feel as though I sense it now more than ever. From school shootings, to the BLM movement, to the Israeli-Palestine conflict. I like how Banksy demonstrated what could be in our hands instead of guns or weapons. The emphasis provided with color on the bouquet of flowers moves the eyes to that part of the artwork. I also like how he specifically chose an area of heavy violence to share and create this piece in. Overall, I like how it can be applied to different varying situations that have conflict in them.

Link: https://www.theartstory.org/artist/banksy/

I chose this artwork from Daria Lednova because I feel like we are not taking climate change serious. We have seen some improvement but there are still a lot of things that need to be done to save our planet. We have to make changes to save our planet the place we all live in. To me this artwork means we should take care of what we have in our planet because if we don't we will end up destroying and being left with nothing. It means we ALL need to participate in saving and preserving our planet. We can continue reducing, reusing and recycling. We can volunteer for cleanups in out communities. Also educate ourselves and others about the current situation we are living in our planet. We can conserve water, plant trees, etc.

Project: Artists for Climate
Title: Preserve What You Have
Artist: Daria Lednova
Country: Rusia
Link: https://thegreats.co/artworks/preserve-what-you-have
