My personal experience with pre writing is that it was always hard to come up with something to write about.  I could not just think of something to write about.  If I was given guidance then it was easier for me to brainstorm ideas.  
Observing Being a first grade IA it is interesting to see the student’s excited to write about a topic, but they also struggle to think of their own topics.  If the teacher does an example of what they are supposed to be writing about, most of the students will just copy what the teacher has written.
