There is rhythm in everything, in nature, in architecture, in our heartbeats.
Every culture has it own rhythms …similar still unique. Today’s drumming session or lesson was a peek into essence of Caribbean music and its rhythm.
I don’t ever do drumming in my free time. I don’t know why because it is very meditating and relaxing. As someone said it really helps to clear your mind. I enjoyed.

All of us go at the rhythm of our lives. We learn at our own rhythm, we feel our own rhythm. When we are in the music rhythm, our heart and body are in the same rhythm as well. We repeat the rhythm many times and repeating it without thinking, forms a skill that remains for the rest of your life. While playing the drums, today we were doing it all by ourselves and at the same time we were all together. It is an experience that has united us. Music heals the soul...

“Where words fail, music speaks” - Hans Christian Andersen. Music is a language that doesn’t require words. It goes without saying that music plays an important role in our lives. You can hardly find a person who doesn’t like or need music and who never sings, dances or plays music. Music can lessen our stress, pain, distraction and bring positivity, calmness in our daily life. Music can also bring different people together. Today, being inspired by both our course lecturer Rita and a drum teacher Edgard, I have played the drum not only trying to listen and feel the rhythm of my own, but being as a part of the whole group as well. I really enjoyed the experience since I was all by myself feeling relaxed and uplifted.

Wow, what a great experience! One thing is to learn or to read something about Gwo ka, but having the opportunity to try out ourselves was really overwhelming. I've learned that there are 7 different rhythms. Each of them plays a specific role, e.g. Woulé or Lewoz. I'm very enthusiastic about the fact that "in 2014, the UNESCO Heritage Committee recognized gwoka in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity."

Music is another language, a way to express your emotions. I've always known that music has played important role in human society. Today I learned about Gwo Ka. This musical genre is characterised by an African typology: repetitive form - improvisation - physical movements - a response between solist and group. I learned many rhytms typical to Guadaloupe, for example, toumblack, woulé, padjanbel. I realised that every human being has a rhytm. It is our heartbeat.

“Hearts that drum together beat together”

Today I have learnt that different people, from very different origins and their different languages can all beat as a single heart, if there’s a wish to work together, to cooperate. It can be done. That’s the power of music.
