Bernard wants to visit the Savage Reservation because he feels restless and out of place in the World State. He’s looking for something different, something authentic that isn’t controlled or engineered. The Reservation represents a chance to see a way of life outside the endless distractions, casual sex, and soma haze that frustrate him. It’s part curiosity, part rebellion, and part desire to find meaning.

Lenina, on the other hand, is horrified by the idea. She sees the Reservation as dirty, uncivilized, and dangerous. Her response is full of disgust and fear—she clings to her conditioning, where anything outside the World State is considered abnormal or even threatening.

This contrast shows how deep the conditioning runs in the World State. Bernard’s desire is unusual, almost deviant, while Lenina’s reaction is exactly what the State has trained her to feel. It highlights that most citizens can’t even imagine life beyond their conditioning, which keeps them obedient and “happy.”
