The blog posts are about various experiences as a school counselor. For example, she talks about being nominated for ASCA’s School Counselor of the Year and how school counselors play a role in academic success with the “Every Student Succeeds Act.” While talking about school counselors and academic success this school counselor advocated for lower counselor to student ratios to help the students become college and career ready and how big of a role school counselor’s play in academic success. One counselor states “it is important for school counselors to advocate for their place in the plan with local administration.” Another school counselor posted some tips on what to do to start making change in your school building. Overall, this blog is a collaborative effort by many school counselors to share their opinions and ideas on how to advocate for change.

This resource addresses collaboration with stakeholders and advocating for the school counselor’s role. It is written by school counselors, school psychologists, and school social workers. Confident Counselors discusses the importance of explaining to students and staff your role in the school at the very beginning of the school year. This would be a good time to talk to staff about working together to increase academic success and close the achievement gap. Many staff members probably do not understand how a school counselor can be of assistance with academics, so speaking to them right away about it would be beneficial. Confident Counselors recommends using data of your school counseling program to show stakeholders how important your role is with academic growth.

Talking to students early in the year would allow you to be more visible and start building rapport with students. This allows the school counselor the chance to talk about what a school counselor does in the school so the role is not misinterpreted. It is important to address all the different roles a school counselor has so students know they can go to you for academic help and well as social and emotional help.

There is one article in particular that addresses the themes in the ASCA National Model titled “ASCA National Model Themes” and another article titled “Executive Summary” that briefly goes over the themes. These articles can be found in the link above. Overall, this website is a place where you can find information about almost anything relating to school counseling.

Self-advocacy is defined as the action of representing oneself or one’s views or interests. This specific article elaborates on the self-advocacy amongst minority students. Minority students consists of people of color, women, LGBTQ, students with disabilities, and students living in poverty (Astramovich & Harris, 2007). As school counselor it is our priority to promote success to help these individuals through their difficult challenges. As stated in the article, these populations as socially devalued and emphasized that, because of societal stigmatization and marginalization, they frequently have little power in influencing decisions that affect their lives. We have to be the voice to stand up to society for the silenced and help encourage a better system (2007). This article also gives principles for self-advocacy as well which consists of self-determination, empowerment, and social justice (2007).

Reference

Astramovich, R.

This article addresses the budget cuts schools are facing and how school counselors are learning how to use what they have to help school counselors do what they need to do. It also addresses how school counselors can reach out to the community for resources to help them.Because school counselors have limited resources they need to collaborate with other stakeholders. This resource also talks about the importance of community mapping, which is something that can help school counselors collaborate with families and administrators. Community mapping allows the school counselor to be aware of what is happening in the community and knowing what resources are available in the community. Overall, this article talks about how school counselors sometimes do not work in the best situation so they have to be aware of what is around in their community to help.
Reference:
Griffin, D., & Farris, A.
Waking up to difference: Teachers, color-blindness, and the effects on students of color

This article particularizes why race should not matter in the idea of how others should be treated. Color-blindness has been around for decades and we are still dealing with these issues today as a society. As stated in the article, research shows that teachers often hold cultural biases that can spark racialized, or cultural “Pygmalion effects” in classroom (Atwater, 2008). School counselors should be the voice of this type of injustice and discrimination within the school system. The article also elaborated on student achievement and how these expectations of these particular students often based on unconscious, or unintentional racial assumptions can have a very real impact on student achievement (2008). With the correct leadership, collaboration between all stakeholders, system change and appropriate advocacy there is a guarantee that color-blindness could be eliminated just have to work hard enough and educate and counsel the appropriate parties or everyone.

Reference

Atwater, S.
