The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is about a boy named Bruno. He lives with his mother, father, servants, and his sister, Gretel. The story begins with the family living in Berlin, Germany in the 1940's. One day, Bruno came home to find the family maid, Maria packing all of his things into a bag. He finds out that him and his family are temporarily moving somewhere far away because his father got a promotion. Compared to the spacious and beautiful house he lived in in Berlin, his new house is mediocre. Bruno had to leave all of his friends in Berlin and where he had moved to, there were no other boys to play with. Bruno realizes that in basically his backyard, were hundreds of children and adults. There was a fence that separated his house from all the other people. He befriended a boy his age named Shmuel that lived on the other side of the fence. They would talk to each other everyday. After talking for a long time, Shmuel informed Bruno that the mysterious location he moved to was called Poland and the place beyond the fence was a Nazi death camp called Auschwitz.

A protagonist is a leading character in a story and an antagonist is a character that is against the main characters actions and beliefs. Bruno and Shmuel are the protagonists of the story because they are the main characters of the story and they have both taught each other many things. The antagonists of the story are the Nazis. They are the people who discriminated and abused the Jews in the concentration camps.

A theme of the story is that friendship can withstand differences of equality. Even though Bruno and Shmuel are young boys living in Poland and share many other similarities, they face very different treatment. Bruno has freedoms in life and Shmuel is a prisoner.
