Hello, my name is Kaylee Davis. I am currently pursuing my Master's in School Counseling.

One of my personal goals is to continue growing in resilience and balance as I juggle being a wife, mother, and graduate student. One of my professional goals is to become a compassionate and effective school counselor who can help students navigate both their academic and personal challenges.

From this course, I would like to gain a deeper understanding of trauma, its effects on students, and strategies I can use to respond with empathy and effectiveness in a school setting.

A little about me: I have been in education for several years, and I enjoy spending time with my family, tending to my garden, and growing in my faith. My own life experiences have fueled my passion for helping others, and I am dedicated to becoming the kind of counselor students can rely on during difficult times.

Legal/Ethical Code Connection

As a future school counselor, the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics (2014) serves as a vital guide for working with students, families, and staff. It emphasizes confidentiality, professional responsibility, cultural competence, and advocacy, all of which are essential when supporting students who may be experiencing or have experienced trauma.

This code connects to my professional role because ethical decision-making is at the core of counseling. When working with students, counselors must be especially mindful of respecting boundaries, ensuring safety, and promoting student well-being. The ACA Code of Ethics provides the framework to approach these sensitive situations responsibly and ethically.

Unit 1 Assignment 1: Reflection & Artifact for Introductions and Assessing Prior Knowledge

As I think about my introduction and the start of this course, I realize how much my personal and professional experiences have already shaped my perspective on mental health and trauma. Teaching for several years has given me a glimpse of how deeply these issues impact students' learning, behavior, and overall well-being. At the same time, my own life experiences have made me more empathetic and aware of the importance of having caring adults who truly listen and provide support. Writing this introduction reminded me that while I have some background knowledge, I am entering this course eager to grow, learn, and build the skills I will need as a school counselor.

Reflecting on my goals also helped me recognize the responsibility that comes with this role. Children and families often turn to school counselors during their most vulnerable moments, and having the right knowledge and tools can make all the difference. I am hopeful that this course will prepare me not only to respond to crisis and trauma when it occurs, but also to create a safe and supportive environment where students feel valued and understood.

Unit 1 Assignment 4: Reflection & Artifact for Reference Guide for Mental Health Disorders

Completing this assignment gave me the opportunity to deepen my understanding of a wide range of mental health disorders, their causes, and the critical importance of early intervention. While I was familiar with some of the disorders beforehand, researching them in detail allowed me to better recognize both the complexity of each condition and the similarities that connect them. Organizing the information into categories of definition, causes, and resources helped me not only retain the content more effectively but also appreciate the importance of evidence-based sources and clear explanations when supporting others in the field of counseling.

I also found the process of locating reliable resources to be valuable, since it highlighted how crucial it is to connect individuals and families to accessible, accurate information. By compiling both professional definitions and practical tools such as websites and helplines, I feel more confident in how I can guide future students, parents, or colleagues to trustworthy supports. Overall, this assignment not only expanded my knowledge but also reinforced the importance of research, clarity, and compassion in understanding trauma and mental health concerns.

Unit 2 Assignment 2: Reflection & Artifact for Developmental Discussion on Trauma

Completing this assignment allowed me to gain a much deeper understanding of how trauma and grief shape individuals' lives, especially children. By examining the ACEs study and connecting it to real-life examples of trauma through course readings and the documentary, I was able to see how theory and research translate into lived experiences. At first, it felt overwhelming to connect so many pieces together, but working through each post helped me organize my thoughts and recognize the importance of trauma-informed practices in my future role as a counselor.

I also appreciated how the documentary analysis challenged me to look beyond surface-level information and consider how trauma can impact academic, social, and emotional development. This assignment reminded me that while trauma can have lasting effects, the role of a helping professional is powerful in offering support, resources, and hope. Overall, I feel that this assignment not only expanded my knowledge but also reinforced my commitment to becoming a counselor who approaches students with empathy, understanding, and trauma-informed care.
