Back then, the Olympics were religious events held to honor the king of gods.  The stadium the Olympics took place in was later destroyed due to an earthquake, and a landslide buried the ruins. Once the ruins were discovered the ancient games were revived in 1896. The Olympic games started off with only male athletes and women were not able to compete until the 1900s.
