Before the flying shuttle, weaving used to be done by passing a weft up and over each and every one of a warps on a fram loom. It was a very tiring and laborous job that took much time. In 1733, John Kay invented something called the flying shuttle. By now, there was already a new invention called the handloom, which was a bigger and more efficient version of the frame loom. Now, instead of weaving a weft through one strand at a time, you just had to shoot a shuttle through the handloom and it would create one row of fabric

The main purpose of the flying shuttle was so that it would be much easier and efficient for weavers to make fabric without having to weave every single strand one at a time.
