Lawyer  - The Lawyer is the unnamed narrator of "Bartleby the Scrivener." He owns a law firm on Wall Street, and he employs four men as scriveners, or copyists: Turkey, Nippers, Ginger Nut, and Bartleby. He is good at dealing with people, at least until he meets Bartleby.

Bartleby - Bartleby is a young man hired by the Lawyer to serve as a scrivener, or law- copyist. He starts out as an excellent copyist, but when asked to examine his work for errors, he replies that he "would prefer not to." 

Purpose:
  • Narrator - Sympathetic
  • Bartleby - Resistant, mysterious

    What does the story aim for?
    • It aims directly at emotion and humor. We, the audience, feel sorry for Bartleby upon learning about his homelessness, but become stressed with him when he refuses to be helpful.
    • This is purposeful: it forces the reader to decide whether he or she favors Bartleby in the presence of a biased narrator.

    Elements or Themes:
    The short story is rather made up of smaller themes spread throughout.
