Expansion of CalFresh to SSI/SSP Recipients!

Beginning June 1, 2019, recipients of SSI/SSP benefits may be eligible for CalFresh Food benefits for the first time! There is no change to the SSI/SSP monthly benefit. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) is a federally funded, state-run program. Also known as welfare, TANF helps families pay for:

• Food

• Housing

• Home energy

• Child care

In addition to cash assistance for living expenses, many states offer job training and help with tuition payments for work-related education.

Each state or tribal government runs its TANF program differently and has a different name.

WIC is designed to help pregnant women, new mothers, and young children eat well and stay healthy. WIC provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health care and social services. The WIC card can be used to buy nutritious foods at many local stores. Online nutrition education is also available.

There are nine WIC sites in Tulare County. With one call to the WIC toll-free number, you can find the location nearest to you, get information on WIC programs and services, and speak to friendly staff members who can answer your questions. In Tulare County, 14.5% of infant deaths from 2015–2017 were caused by accidental suffocation or strangulation in bed, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and Sudden Unexplained Infant Death (SUID). The Safe Asleep program provides participants with education, tools, and tips to reduce risks associated with infant sleeping conditions and to improve the health and safety of infants and their families.

TCPH achieved accreditation in September 2020 and is preparing for submission to become reaccredited in 2025. To build on the 2017 Community Health Assessment (CHA), TCPH launched a follow-up effort in 2021. This two-year initiative involved data collection and collaboration with community partners. The CHA serves as a foundation for developing plans to enhance our community's overall health.

The amount of cash aid a family may be eligible to receive depends on several factors, such as the family’s size, income, and any special needs of family members.

The California Youth Crisis Line (CYCL) operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week as the statewide emergency response system for youth (ages 12-24) and families in crisis. Professionally trained staff and volunteer counselors respond to 17,000 calls annually with crisis intervention counseling and resource referrals to service providers in the caller’s local community. We have access to more than 5,500 free or low-cost resources for youth and families across California.

For 34 years, we have listened to hundreds of thousands of youth and families in crisis from all over California about many struggles. Thoughts of suicide, depression, bullying, health and identity questions, trauma, human trafficking or any teen-related struggle are discussed with a crisis counselor in confidence and without judgment.
