Families with children under five who were previously on Healthy Families and now have Medi-Cal may be eligible for WIC.

WIC is designed to help pregnant women, new mothers, and young children eat well and stay healthy. WIC provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health care and social services. The WIC card can be used to buy nutritious foods at many local stores. Online nutrition education is also available.

There are nine WIC sites in Tulare County. With one call to the WIC toll-free number, you can find the location nearest to you, get information on WIC programs and services, and speak to friendly staff members who can answer your questions. For a list of frequent questions and answers, see the links below.

The foods provided through WIC are good sources for essential nutrients. The Community Health Assessment (CHA) assesses health behaviors and outcomes, as well as social, economic, and environmental factors impacting health in Tulare County.

TCPH achieved accreditation in September 2020 and is preparing for submission to become reaccredited in 2025. To build on the 2017 Community Health Assessment (CHA), TCPH launched a follow-up effort in 2021. This two-year initiative involved data collection and collaboration with community partners. The CHA serves as a foundation for developing plans to enhance our community's overall health.

First, you have rights, starting with the right to live in a safe environment and you deserve to be treated with respect. You also have the right to services you need to successfully prepare for adulthood as you approach the age of 18. In addition, through Extended Foster Care (provided you continue to meet certain conditions), you have the right to remain in foster care and continue to receive support after you turn 18 until the age of 21.

And fresh produce isn’t readily available in many low-income neighborhoods where grocery stores are sparse.

This gap in nutrition costs our community with high absenteeism from work and school as well as high rates of chronic disease. Chronic illness contributes to worsening food insecurity. It is a vicious cycle.

California Youth Crisis Line

The California Youth Crisis Line (CYCL) operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week as the statewide emergency response system for youth (ages 12-24) and families in crisis. Professionally trained staff and volunteer counselors respond to 17,000 calls annually with crisis intervention counseling and resource referrals to service providers in the caller’s local community. We have access to more than 5,500 free or low-cost resources for youth and families across California.

For 34 years, we have listened to hundreds of thousands of youth and families in crisis from all over California about many struggles. Thoughts of suicide, depression, bullying, health and identity questions, trauma, human trafficking or any teen-related struggle are discussed with a crisis counselor in confidence and without judgment. We do not provide advice. We listen with compassion. If you or someone you know is experiencing any type of teen-related struggle or crisis, please call 1-800-843-5200. Translation services are available for multiple languages.

This can take time. If you want something more immediately, you can borrow money. Borrowing money, however, means that you have to pay back the money you borrowed over time. And sometimes you have to pay interest.

Credit cards, for instance, are not linked to a bank account, but debit cards are. That means you can use debit cards to pay for things with money you already have. Generally speaking, a debit card is directly linked to a checking account. Credit cards use money that is loaned. You can use it to buy something and pay for it later.
