The African Golden Cat Caracal aurata is one of the least-known felines in the world. About twice the size of a domestic cat, they are medium sized but sturdy, powerful animals, with stout, relatively short legs and large paws. There are two colour forms: golden/reddish brown and silvery/dark slate-grey. Both red and grey phases occur in the same areas, but few melanistic specimens have been recorded.

The Black-footed Cat "Felis nigripes" is Africa’s smallest feline, and among the smallest wild cat species in the world.

The soft, dense coat ranges from dark to pale tawny gold, with a bold pattern of rounded dark brown to black spots which sometimes merge into bands or rings. Their large eyes are amber or greyish brown. The chin, chest, belly and insides of the legs are whitish, and the backs of the ears are pale brown. There are two dark streaks across each cheek, and dark bars on the forelegs and haunches. The short tail, about half the body length, has two or three black rings, tapering to a black tipped point.

Lions are the only obviously sexually dimorphic cat, with the male having a noticeable yellowish to dark brown mane of hair on the neck and shoulders. The coat colour of both the male (lion) and the female (lioness) is usually a uniform tawny colour, but can vary from silvery grey to yellowish red and dark ochraceous brown. The face is broad and the muzzle is relatively long with a mostly black nose pad. The iris is yellow to amber in colour, and the pupils are round. The ears are short and rounded with black over most of their backs. The forelimbs are more powerfully built than the hind limbs, and the footpads are large. The tail is relatively long, with a dark tuft of fur at the end.

The Cheetah "Acinonyx jubatus," with its strange mixture of dog like and cat like features, is one of the world’s most popular cats. Famous for being the fastest land animal, their speed has been estimated at about 95 km per hour for a brief period. This kind of speed is only possible over open ground, thus they are limited in their range.

Leopards "Panthera pardus are the most widespread and adaptable big cat, and are found in almost every habitat, from desert to rainforest. Because of this wide distribution, Leopards exhibit extreme variability in coat colour, ranging from greyish or pale yellow to a rich buff or chestnut colour. There are black spots on the head, lower limbs and tail, and black spots that form rosettes on the back, flanks, and upper limbs of the sleek, athletic body. The underside of the body is whitish in colour. Coat colour and patterning are broadly associated with habitat type.
