Sure he may not be entirely book accurate but Karloff brings a humanity to the role that has become iconic in its own right. Another part I love about the character is the design of the monster by legendary makeup designer Jack Pierce who designed all of the Universal Monsters. The design has become so iconic that the design pops up every Halloween to sell various merchandise. In future movies the monster became less interesting of a character. In Son of Frankenstein The Monster just becomes a pawn for Ygor and the Son of Frankenstein, however Karloff still brings a humanity to the role. In Ghost of Frankenstein the role was taken by Lon Chaney jr. who’s great as The Wolf Man but as The Monster is just dull. Also in the film The Monster gets a brain transplant with Ygor so he takes over the monster’s body so for all intents and purposes the character as we know him is dead, but I still love Karloff’s tragic, human performance as The Monster.
